Bio Farzad is a cardiologist and design strategist running the Advanced Innovation Incubator in the Advanced Technology unit at Edwards Lifesciences.
Leading with a patient-centered and needs-driven approach, his team is responsible for specifying unmet clinical needs in structural heart disease, generating new concepts to solve those needs, and experimenting with early-stage prototyping and feasibility testing in order to translate concepts to clinical and commercial pathways ahead.
Academically, Farzad serves as Adjunct Professor of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine where he teaches creative design strategy for health and medical technologies at the Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign. He also serves as Fellowship Director to the Edwards Lifesciences Innovation Fellowship Program for cardiovascular physicians and surgeons.
Prior to his current roles, Farzad served as Chief Medical Officer at Myia Labs (an ACC-backed digital health start-up) and Director of Health at IDEO. He completed his training in medicine and cardiology at the Cleveland Clinic and the University of Minnesota’s Lillehei Heart Institute respectively. He served as Chief Cardiology Fellow and NIH T32 research fellow designing and testing new technologies for augmented vascular access and cardio-embolic stroke protection, and completed his post-doctoral education as the St. Jude Medical and Dean’s Innovation Fellow at Stanford Biodesign.
Farzad holds a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from the University of Texas at Austin, an MD from the University of Texas Medical Branch, and a post-doctoral designation in Biodesign from Stanford University School of Medicine.
He is the recipient of Phi Beta Kappa distinction and the Arnold P. Gold Humanism in Medicine Award.
