Attending Physician in Cardiology (Fee-Basis) at VA Palo Alto Healthcare System, Post-doctoral Research Fellow at Stanford Cardiovascular Institute, PhD Candidate in Epidemiology and Population Health Sciences. Graduate of Stanford Internal Medicine / Global Health Residency / Chief Resident, and Cardiology Fellowship Programs.

My professional interests include epidemiology and health services research focused on heart disease and environmental determinants of cardiovascular disorders, particularly in global vulnerable populations. I also have a longstanding interest in studying and improving the quality of care for neglected tropical heart diseases of low- and middle-income countries, chief among them rheumatic heart disease. I consider myself methodologically agnostic, and incorporate classic descriptive/analytic epidemiology, big data/outcomes analysis, health systems modeling, and geographic information services techniques in my work.

- Created protocols, staffed, and managed the Hepatitis B program at Pacific Free Clinic,a student-run health clinic providing medical care for uninsured and underserved populations in the San Jose, CA area.

Current Research and Scholarly Interests

My research interests center around the epidemiology, environmental determinants, and health services dimensions of heart disease, with an emphasis on vulnerable populations, both international and domestic. Current projects include the development of novel care quality metrics for use in rheumatic heart disease in East Africa, testing of low sodium salt substitutes in South Asia, describing the global patterns of cardiovascular multimorbidity, and assessing the cardiovascular impacts of cyclical climate change-associated major environmental events. Other research interests include cost-effectiveness analysis, health economics, and device/service innovation for low-resource settings.

Clinical investigations in breast cancer include institutional and NSABP studies of chemoprevention, adjuvant therapy, psychosocial interventions, treatment of metastatic disease, methods of decreasing anthracycline cardiotoxicity, and modulation of multidrug resistance. Research in meta-analysis includes the performance of meta-analysis in a wide variety of settings in cancer treatment by the international Meta-Analysis Group in Cancer.

Research Interests
My lab of molecular and cellular immunology is interested in research in the general field of T cell activation and autoimmunity. We have identified and characterized a gene (GRAIL) that seems to control regulatory T cell (Treg) responsiveness by inhibiting the Treg IL-2 receptor desensitization. We have characterized a gene (Deaf1) that plays a major role in peripheral tolerance in T1D. Using PBC gene expression, we have provisionally identified a signature of risk and progression in T1D.

Our lab has been developing tools for the analyses of complex data structures, extending work on multivariate data to structured multitable table that include graphs, networks and trees as well as categorical and continuous measurements.
We created and support the Bioconductor package phyloseq for the analyses of microbial ecology data from the microbiome. We have specialized in developing interactive graphical visualization tools for doing reproducible research in biology.

Research Interests
Dr. Jeffrey led the multidisciplinary team from the Schools of Medicine, Engineering, and Genome Technology Center that invented the MagSweeper, an automated device that immunomagnetically captures live circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from cancer patient blood for single cell analysis or culture. Her lab also works on microfluidic technologies for tumor cell capture, characterization, and growth - with the goal of defining individual patient response to newer biologically-based cancer therapies.
