The investigators hypothesize that the absorption of topically applied EFA-containing emollient (SSO) into the skin and thence into the bloodstream in children with SAM will improve skin barrier function and accelerate weight gain and clinical rehabilitation beyond that possible through normal standard-of-care

My research focuses on the relationship between sleep abnormalities and pain behavior and opioid pharmacology in the postoperative, as well as chronic pain setting. More specifically, I am interested in delineating the effect of the different components of sleep-diosordered breathing, like nocturnal recurrent hypoxemia and sleep fragmentation on pain behavior in the acute and/or chronic care setting.

Research Interests
Dr. Hammer's primary research interests are pediatric pharmacology and perioperative care of children undergoing cardiac surgery. He has numerous funded research projects in these areas, including an NIH grant for $4.3 million to study the pharmacology of sodium nitroprusside, a drug commonly used for blood pressure control in the operating room and ICU. Dr. Hammer has two other NIH grants and other ongoing research projects in the area of pediatric pharmacology.
