Research Seminar Series: Dana Rose Garfin
Cumulative Adversity: Clarifying the Problem, Proposing Solutions
This presentation will review research on psychological responses to individual (e.g., violence, abuse) and collective (e.g., earthquakes, terrorist attacks, hurricanes, COVID-19) adversity using longitudinal epidemiological data collected prior to and in the wake of collective trauma. Several public health interventions will be discussed as potential solutions for improving community mental health.

Dana Rose Garfin is an Assistant Adjunct Professor in the Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing at the University of California, Irvine. Her work explores how individual-level negative life events and collective trauma affect physical and mental health across the lifespan and how community-based interventions can alleviate resulting health disparities. Her work is currently funded by the National Institutes on Minority Health and Health Disparities and the National Science Foundation. She received an MA in Social Ecology and a PhD in Psychology and Social Behavior from the University of California, Irvine.
