Profs. Karla Miller and Stephen Smith will join us remotely via video conferencing and give an overview of their experiences working on the UK Biobank initiative followed by an extended interactive discussion period. The UK Biobank (http://www.ukbiobank.ac.uk) is prospectively acquiring health information (environmental and lifestyle factors, blood chemistry, genetics, retrospective outcomes) on 500,000 people and imaging data (brain, heart, abdomen, bones and carotid artery) on a subset (100,000) of those same participants with the ultimate goal of discovering early markers and risk factors of disease. Both Prof. Miller and Prof. Smith are on the UK Biobank Imaging Working Group and Scientific Directors of the brain imaging component of the UK Biobank. Their recent article in Nature Neuroscience (http://rdcu.be/uQMQ) describes results on the first 5,000 participants.
