Jeremy Goldhaber-Fiebert, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Medicine, a Core Faculty Member at the Centers for Health Policy/Primary Care and Outcomes Research, and a Faculty Affiliate of the Stanford Center on Longevity and Stanford Center for International Development. His research focuses on complex policy decisions surrounding the prevention and management of increasingly common, chronic diseases and the life course impact of exposure to their risk factors. In the context of both developing and developed countries including the US, India, China, and South Africa, he has examined chronic conditions including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, human papillomavirus and cervical cancer, tuberculosis, and hepatitis C and on risk factors including smoking, physical activity, obesity, malnutrition, and other diseases themselves. He combines simulation modeling methods and cost-effectiveness analyses with econometric approaches and behavioral economic studies to address these issues. Dr. Goldhaber-Fiebert graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College in 1997, with an A.B. in the History and Literature of America. After working as a software engineer and consultant, he conducted a year-long public health research program in Costa Rica with his wife in 2001. Winner of the Lee B. Lusted Prize for Outstanding Student Research from the Society for Medical Decision Making in 2006 and in 2008, he completed his PhD in Health Policy concentrating in Decision Science at Harvard University in 2008. He was elected as a Trustee of the Society for Medical Decision Making in 2011.

Prof. Sindy KY Tang is the Kenneth and Barbara Oshman Faculty Scholar and Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and by courtesy of Radiology (Precision Health and Integrated Diagnostics) at Stanford University. She received her Ph.D. from Harvard University in Engineering Sciences under the supervision of Prof. George Whitesides. Her lab at Stanford works on the fundamental understanding of fluid mechanics and mass transport in micro-nano systems, and the application of this knowledge towards problems in biology, rapid diagnostics for health and environmental sustainability. The current areas of focus include the flow physics of confined micro-droplets using experimental and machine learning methods, interfacial mass transport and self-assembly, and ultrahigh throughput opto-microfluidic systems for disease diagnostics, water and energy sustainability, and single-cell wound healing studies. She was a Stanford Biodesign Faculty Fellow in 2018. Zhenan Bao joined Stanford University in 2004. She is currently a K.K. Lee Professor in Chemical Engineering, and with courtesy appointments in Chemistry and Material Science and Engineering. She is the Department Chair of Chemical Engineering from 2018. She is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and National Academy of Inventors. She founded the Stanford Wearable Electronics Initiative (eWEAR) and is the current faculty director. She is also an affiliated faculty member of Precourt Institute, Woods Institute, ChEM-H and Bio-X. Professor Bao received her Ph.D. degree in Chemistry from The University of Chicago in 1995 and joined the Materials Research Department of Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies. She became a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff in 2001. Professor Bao currently has more than 400 refereed publications and more than 60 US patents. She served as a member of Executive Board of Directors for the Materials Research Society and Executive Committee Member for the Polymer Materials Science and Engineering division of the American Chemical Society. She was an Associate Editor for the Royal Society of Chemistry journal Chemical Science, Polymer Reviews and Synthetic Metals. She serves on the international advisory board for Advanced Materials, Advanced Energy Materials, ACS Nano, Accounts of Chemical Reviews, Advanced Functional Materials, Chemistry of Materials, Chemical Communications, Journal of American Chemical Society, Nature Asian Materials, Materials Horizon and Materials Today. She is one of the Founders and currently sits on the Board of Directors of C3 Nano Co. and PyrAmes, both are silicon valley venture funded companies. She is Fellow of AAAS, ACS, MRS, SPIE, ACS POLY and ACS PMSE. She was a recipient of the Wilhelm Exner Medal from the Austrian Federal Minister of Science in 2018, the L'Oreal UNESCO Women in Science Award North America Laureate in 2017. She was awarded the ACS Applied Polymer Science Award in 2017, ACS Creative Polymer Chemistry Award in 2013 ACS Cope Scholar Award in 2011, and was selected by Phoenix TV, China as 2010 Most influential Chinese in the World-Science and Technology Category. She is a recipient of the Royal Society of Chemistry Beilby Medal and Prize in 2009, IUPAC Creativity in Applied Polymer Science Prize in 2008, American Chemical Society Team Innovation Award 2001, R&D 100 Award, and R&D Magazine Editors Choice Best of the Best new technology for 2001. She has been selected in 2002 by the American Chemical Society Women Chemists Committee as one of the twelve Outstanding Young Woman Scientist who is expected to make a substantial impact in chemistry during this century. She is also selected by MIT Technology Review magazine in 2003 as one of the top 100 young innovators for this century. She has been selected as one of the recipients of Stanford Terman Fellow and has been appointed as the Robert Noyce Faculty Scholar, Finmeccanica Faculty Scholar and David Filo and Jerry Yang Faculty Scholar.

Jan grew up in Michigan and New York. He received a BA from Reed College (1993-96) and a PhD from Cambridge University, UK (Churchill College, 1996-99).

PhD Research. In Cambridge, he used stochastic context free grammars (SCFGs) to find patterns in genomes; the computational problem is that some biological regulatory patterns are palindromes, which are difficult to detect with conventional machine learning or statistical tools. Palindromes are longer range, possibly knotted, correlations among elements within strings (such as genomes). The human brain can pick out the palindrome in 1111234111114321111 (1234<->4321), but it’s not so easy to do that with a conventional computer, especially with degenerate/noisy palindromes. Jan used SCFGs to find signals in the yeast genome that may regulate translational recoding, a process in which one strand of RNA can encode two different proteins.

Postdoctoral Research. After his PhD, he joined the labs of Carlos Bustamante and Nacho Tinoco, Jr. (in the UC Berkeley Physics and Chemistry Depts.). With Carlos and Nacho, he developed methods for using light to stretch single strands of RNA, and then used these tools to study the dynamics of small, violently perturbed small systems. After 2 years as a postdoc, he became the divisional fellow of the Physical Biosciences Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. He joined the Berkeley Physics faculty in 2004. Jan is now an associate professor of Bioengineering at Stanford University.

Jan is a Searle Scholar, a Sloan Research Fellow, a Hellman Fellow, and the recipient of the 2007 Mohr Davidow Ventures Innovator’s Award. Basic research in his lab is funded by federal agencies such as the NCI, NIGMS, NSF, and the DOE. Dr. Seung-min Park is a Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Radiology at Stanford University School of Medicine. He completed his B.S degree (Physics) at Seoul National University (2002). He received his Ph.D. (Applied Physics) from Cornell University in 2008. After he completed his postdoctoral training in the Department of Bioengineering at University of California, Berkeley, he joined Stanford University School of Medicine as Instructor. His research interest lies in the intersection of nanobio-engineering and disease diagnostics.

With my background in medicine, microdevice engineering, and nanotechnology, my strengths lie in developing novel solutions to urgent problems in medicine and cancer research. Having developed a diagnostic microfluidic device at Caltech and initiated a clinical trial to test the device on glioblastoma patients at UCLA, I’m particlularly interested in moving promising technologies past the proof-of-concept phase and into the clinic. My career goals are to continue to work at the interface of medicine and technology as an academic scientist, engineering new wearable and implantable technologies for earlier cancer detection and continuous monitoring.

Dr. Dennis P. Wall, Ph.D. is Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Biomedical Data Sciences at Stanford Medical School.  He leads a lab in Pediatric Innovation focused on developing methods in biomedical informatics to disentangle complex conditions that originate in childhood and perpetuate through the life course, including autism and related developmental delays.  For over a decade, first on faculty at Harvard and now at Stanford University, and as healthcare has shifted increasingly to the use of digital technologies for data capture and finer resolutions of genomic scale, Dr. Wall has innovated, adapted and deployed bioinformatic strategies to enable precise and personalized interpretation of high resolution molecular and phenotypic data. Dr. Wall has pioneered the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence for fast, quantitative and mobile detection of neurodevelopmental disorders in children, as well as the use of use of machine learning systems on wearable devices, such as Google Glass, for real-time exclinical therapy. These same precision health approaches enable quantitative tracking of progress during treatment throughout an individual’s life enabling big data generation of a type and scale never before possible, and have defined a new paradigm for behavioral detection and therapy that has won Dr. Wall several awards including a spot in the top ten of the World’s top 30 autism researchers. Dr. Wall has acted as science advisor to several biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, has created and advised on cutting-edge approaches to cloud computing, and has received numerous awards, including the Fred R. Cagle Award for Outstanding Achievement in Biology, the Vice Chancellor's Award for Research, three awards for excellence in teaching, the Harvard Medical School Leadership award, and the Slifka/Ritvo Clinical Innovation in Autism Research Award for outstanding advancements in clinical translation.  He completed his Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley and a National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellowship in Computational Genetics at Stanford University before joining the faculty at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Wall’s approaches go beyond phenotypic characterization to collection and analysis of molecular data, including DNA, RNA, and microbiome, recognizing that biomarkers and targets for therapy are likely to arise from a combined set of data modalities. Dr. Wall has sequenced and continues to sequence thousands of whole genomes of children with autism and other developmental conditions, and has built clinical annotation resources for use in personalized and precision health, and on efforts in clinical genomics reporting and decision support. As one of the biggest barriers to clinical genomics in healthcare is computational bottlenecks, Dr. Wall has focused on methods for genomic data processing that are fast, accurate, and cost-effective. Among others, Dr. Wall has built solutions for real-time annotation of genomic data in the cloud and as a consequence has been awarded several Amazon computing grants for access to the cloud and invited to speak at a variety of forums nationally and internationally, including keynote speaker at the Amazon Reinvent conference. Also of relevance to the lifecourse, Dr. Wall has developed innovative systems medicine methods for comparative network analysis including approaches in game theory that significantly improved signal detection for complex genetic disorders, including autism and beyond, web-based tools for comparative network analysis that have led to discovery of important connections between autism and certain autoimmune disorders, use of haplotype structure together properties of disorder networks to prioritize long and unruly lists of candidates for autism into an organized set of markers with high likelihood of clinical utility. All of these approaches have enabled faster gains towards characterizing the molecular pathology of autism, and have broad applications for deciphering impacts to health across the life course.

Pablo Paredes is part of the faculty, as an Instructor, in the Radiology, and the Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Departments at Stanford University. His research focuses on subtle interventions to reduce stress, such as guiding people to breathe slowly with subtle haptic cues from car seats or office furniture, and passive sensing of affective and physiological biomarkers derived from existing devices (such as computers, phones, etc.) or embedded systems in daily furniture. Dr. Paredes leads the Pervasive Wellbeing Technology Lab,  and recently was invited to give a TED Talk on his research. He has advised several PhD, masters and undergrad students. Prior to joining the School of Medicine, he was a Postdoctoral Researcher in Computer Science at Stanford University for two years. Dr. Paredes earned his PhD in Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley in 2015. During his PhD career, he held internships on behavior change and affective computing in Microsoft Research and Google. Before 2010 he was a senior strategic manager with Intel in Sao Paulo, Brazil, a lead product manager with Telefonica in Quito, Ecuador and an Entrepreneur in his natal Cuenca, Ecuador. In these roles, he has had the opportunity to closely evaluate designers, engineers, business people and researchers in telecommunications, product development, and ubiquitous computing. 

Dr. Emmanuel Mignot, is Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University and Director of the Stanford Center of Sleep Sciences and Medicine and the Center for Narcolepsy. Dr. Mignot is a former student of the Ecole Normale Superieure (Ulm, Paris, France). He received his M.D. and Ph.D. from Paris V and VI University in France. He practiced medicine in France for several years before serving as a visiting scholar at the Stanford Sleep Disorders Clinic and Research Center and later as a visiting assistant professor at Stanford University. He joined the Stanford faculty as acting assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and was named director of the Stanford Center for Narcolepsy in 1993. Dr. Mignot was named professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences in 2001. He was named director of the newly developed Stanford Center of Sleep Sciences and Medicine in 2009.

Dr. Mignot identified and cloned a mutation in the hypocretin (orexin) receptor-2 gene from dogs suffering from the symptoms of narcolepsy. He went on to find that human narcolepsy is due to the specific loss of hypocretin-expressing neurons. This discovery is considered one of the most important in sleep research for the last 50 years. It has now led to the development of new hypnotics that block the hypocretin (orexin) receptor, and is likely to have other therapeutic applications as well.

Following on this discovery, his laboratory went on to how that the disorder has a genetic architecture strongly suggesting involvement of HLA presentation to CD4 T cells. Following on this finding, his laboratory demonstrated that narcolepsy is a selective autoimmune disease of the hypocretin system, also showing for the first time the involvement of molecular mimicry in humans, with influenza A in this case. He also works on various other sleep disorders, and has a special interest in developing new biomarkers of disease and brain health using signal processing of nocturnal polysomnography.

Dr. Mignot has received numerous research grants and honors, including National Sleep Foundation and National Institute of Health Research Awards, the Narcolepsy Network professional service award, the Drs. C. and F. Demuth 11th Award for Young Investigators in the Neurosciences, the WC Dement Academic Achievement Award in sleep disorders medicine, the CINP and ACNP awards in neuropharmacology, the Mc Knight Neuroscience award, an Howard Hughes Medical Investigator Award and the Jacobaeus prize. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and of the Institute of Medicine. He is the co-author of more than 200 original scientific publications, and he serves on the editorial board of scientific journals in the field of psychiatry and sleep disorders research. Dr. Mignot is an active member of several professional and governmental organizations and is former chair of the National Center on Sleep Disorders Research Advisory board (NHLBI) and former chair of the board of Scientific Counselor (NIMH) of the National Institutes of Health.

Most of his current research focuses on the neurobiology, genetics and immunology of narcolepsy, a disorder caused by hypocretin (orexin) cell loss, with indirect interest in the neuroimmunology of other brain disorders. His laboratory uses state of the art human genetics techniques, such as genome wide association, exome or whole genome sequencing in the study of human sleep and sleep disorders, with parallel studies in animal models. His laboratory is also interested in web-based assessments of sleep disorders, computer-based processing of polysomnography (PSG), and outcomes research.

Garry E. Gold, MD, is a clinical radiologist and an active investigator specializing in patient-oriented research. Following completion of his Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1988, Dr. Gold earned his medical degree in 1992 from the Stanford University School of Medicine. In 1993, he began the Stanford Department of Radiology Residency Program, during which he spent two years serving as an NCI Cancer Imaging Fellow from 1995-1997 under the supervision of Dr. Albert Macovski. After board certification in Radiology, Dr. Gold became an Osteoradiology Fellow at the University of California in San Diego under Dr. Donald Resnick from 1998-1999. He was appointed an Assistant Professor in Stanford’s Department of Radiology in January 2000. In 2006, Dr. Gold became an Associate Professor with tenure in the Department of Radiology. In 2011 Dr. Gold was awarded the first phase of this K24 project which has produced many successful clinically oriented researchers (see tables). In 2012, Dr. Gold was promoted to Professor of Radiology and by courtesy Bioengineering and Orthopaedic Surgery. He was also appointed as the Associate Chair for Research in Radiology at Stanford.

Dr. Gold has earned an international reputation as a clinical radiologist and patient-oriented researcher specializing in osteoarthritis and translational MRI development. His unique background in electrical engineering and radiology has resulted in over 200 peer-reviewed articles and eight successful patent applications. He is Past President of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) and the Society for Computer Body Tomography and Magnetic Resonance (SCBT/MR). In recognition of his widely respected research and mentoring, he has won multiple honors, including the SCBT/MR Lauterbur Award multiple times. In 2011 he was named a Fellow of the ISMRM and Academy of Radiology Research Distinguished Investigator. In 2013 he was named Faculty of the Year for Stanford Radiology. In 2016 Dr. Gold was named as a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE).
