Education

Stanford has a long history of clinical informatics innovation and education, including launching the first ACGME-accredited clinical informatics fellowship program in 2014. Our team currently supports several educational initiatives and programs for a variety of learners.

Fellows

The Stanford Clinical Informatics Fellowship Program was the first ACGME-accredited program of its kind! Please visit the fellowship home page for more details.

Residents

Stanford currently offers 2- and 4-week clinical informatics electives for pediatric residents. Visiting rotations are possible for appropriate candidates. For residents in other specialties, rotation requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

See the rotation website for more details.

Scholarly Projects

Stanford pediatric residents may choose to do a clinical informatics project as part of their scholarly concentration. While previous residents have done CI projects from a variety of scholarly concentrations, the quality improvement track aligns quite well with clinical informatics work.

Clinical Informatics Liason Program

Pediatrics residents can apply to join our CI liaison group to help inform changes and improvements to the electronic health record and technologies at Stanford Medicine Children's Health. Liaisons join team meetings and help communicate feedback between the residents and the Digital Information Services staff. Interested residents should reach out to the chiefs at the beginning of the academic year.

Medical & Non-Clinical Students

Our team currently leads the following clinical informatics seminars for students in the Biomedical Data Science graduate programs at Stanford:

BIOMEDIN 208: Clinical Informatics Seminar - an opportunity to review key literature and subjects in the clinical informatics arena:

Weekly seminar series in which seminal literature and current publications in the field of clinical informatics are reviewed and discussed. Organized by the Stanford Clinical Informatics fellowship program. Topics include electronic health record design, implementation, and evaluation; patient engagement; provider satisfaction; and hot topics in clinical informatics. Limited enrollment.

BIOMEDIN 304: Clinical Experience Seminar for informatics graduate students to expose them to clinical care delivery systems:

This seminar is intended to expose Biomedical Informatics graduate students to clinical environments where informatics is being applied. Students will shadow clinical care and interact with physicians and other allied health professionals throughout Stanford Healthcare and Stanford Children's Health during weekly sessions. Students will be asked to reflect on their experiences and discuss future applications to informatics projects. Preference will be given to senior students. Requires Course Director approval for enrollment - students should register 30 days prior to the first day of class for consideration. Prerequisites: School of Medicine HIPAA Training; Occupational Health clearance; SHC Compliance Attestation. All prerequisites must be submitted 2 weeks before the 1st day in order to ensure hospital compliance.
