Deborah E. Addicott - John A. Kriewall and Elizabeth A. Haehl Family Professor of Pediatrics
Division of Quality of Life and Palliative Care, Division Chief
My journey into pediatric palliative care has been both personal and professional, shaped by a deep commitment to improving the lives of children and families facing serious illness. I began my career as a Pediatric Oncologist, where I witnessed firsthand the emotional and physical suffering endured by children with advanced disease. These experiences compelled me to seek better ways to support them—beyond just the biomedical approach.
During my tenure at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, I helped found the institution’s first pediatric palliative care program and developed two home-based pediatric palliative care teams to extend support to families where they need it most. I also led the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program for over a decade, helping to train and mentor future leaders in the field.
My research has focused on patient-reported outcomes, innovative care models, grief and bereavement, and symptom control. I’ve been fortunate to lead or collaborate on over 100 studies, and to mentor more than 60 post-doctoral trainees, fellows, and junior faculty members. These roles, along with the opportunity to contribute over 300 scholarly works to the field, have given me a rich and fulfilling career path that combines clinical care, research, education, and advocacy.
Why Stanford?
Stanford offers a unique environment where innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a commitment to human-centered care come together to push the boundaries of what’s possible in medicine. I was drawn to Stanford because of its bold vision and its alignment with my own aspirations to elevate pediatric palliative care on both a national and global scale.
As the Inaugural Chief of the Division of Quality of Life and Pediatric Palliative Care and the Director of the Quality of Life for All (QoLA) Program, I’ve been given the extraordinary opportunity to build something meaningful from the ground up. Stanford’s resources, its incredible community of clinicians and scholars, and its emphasis on holistic, compassionate care make it the perfect place to drive forward innovations that truly center children and families. It’s more than just a job—it’s a calling, and Stanford provides the platform to fulfill it.
What do you like to do for fun outside of work?
When I’m not working, my greatest joy comes from spending time with my family. I’ve been happily married to my college sweetheart, Monny—who’s originally from Monterrey, Mexico—for over two decades. Together, we’re raising four wonderful children who constantly inspire and humble me. They are all actually thriving young adults now…I am getting pretty old.
I also try to bring a sense of play and balance into my life outside of work. I love playing golf—it’s both a mental challenge and a way to decompress in nature. More recently, I’ve picked up pickleball, which is a fun, fast-paced way to stay active and connect with friends and colleagues. And yes, I’m proudly the world’s most enthusiastic collector of stuffed koalas! I even have a koala bobblehead of myself and several real koalas “adopted” in my name. It’s a bit quirky, but it’s become a joyful and lighthearted part of who I am.
