*While on inpatient consults at LPCH, fellows will see patients in outpatient clinic ½ day per week
**Fellows have an opportunity to customize their training experience to support their individual career goals through elective rotations. Fellows may choose to spend additional time with already defined rotations in the fellowship program or from a wide variety of additional clinical rotations, including integrative medicine, complex care, ethics, ambulatory palliative care, and other subspecialty care electives. Fellows with an interest in developing additional research skills may choose to participate in the quality improvement or medical education scholarly concentrations through the Stanford Pediatrics Residency Program, where they will receive dedicated mentorship, training in methodology, and support for project development.
Clinical Training and Sites
Fellows have the opportunity to learn from thriving interdisciplinary palliative care teams at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital and Stanford University Hospital, and through collaborative partnerships with community organizations including Santa Clara Valley Medicine Center and By the Bay Health.
Stanford Medicine Children’s Health
Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital (LPCH) is a large 426-bed academic medical center within Stanford Medicine Children’s Health. In 2023, Lucile Packard Children's Hospital had over 13,000 inpatient admissions and more than 500,000 patient encounters across its various outpatient and specialty services. Stanford Medicine Children's Health offers the full spectrum of quaternary-level pediatric care, including a 24-hour emergency department, specialized pediatric subspecialty care in both the inpatient and outpatient settings, a 36-bed pediatric intensive care unit, dedicated services for high-risk pregnancies with over 4,000 deliveries annually and a 40-bed neonatal intensive care unit, a 36-bed cardiovascular intensive care unit, a bone marrow transplant unit and a wide range of operating suites. The hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission, carries Magnet Status for Nursing and is ranked in 11 pediatric subspecialties with 3 subspecialties ranked in the top 10 nationwide by US News & World Report. Stanford Medicine Children's Health serves a highly diverse population of pediatric patients from a wide ranges of socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Fellows will spend 6 four-week blocks with the inpatient pediatric palliative care consult team.
Stanford University Hospital
Stanford University Hospital is a 613-bed academic medical center within Stanford Medicine with over 26,000 inpatient admissions and 1.2 million outpatient visits annually. Stanford Medicine. Stanford Medicine has a long tradition of excellence in clinical care, pioneering research, and innovative teaching. The palliative care team at Stanford Medicine has grown significantly over the last decade and established a Palliative Care Center of Excellence to be on the leading edge of clinical care, research and education. Fellows will have an opportunity to spend 2 weeks with the inpatient consult team and 2 weeks in outpatient clinic.
Santa Clara Valley Medical Center
Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (SCVMC) is the oldest and only publicly-operated hospital in Santa Clara County serving a broad and diverse patient population. SCVMC is a 574-bed hospital with a separate pediatric floor containing a 30-bed general pediatric unit, which includes an Inpatient Pediatric Rehabilitation Unit, and a 12-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. SCVMC has a longstanding affiliation with the Stanford University School of Medicine, including with Stanford Pediatrics Residency and the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency (PMR) Programs.
By the Bay Health
By the Bay was the first hospice in California and the second in the U.S. As a non-profit Medicare-certified hospice, By the Bay Health focuses on enhancing the quality of life for patients experiencing serious illness across the lifespan. In 2023, By the Bay Health provided hospice services to approximately 2,700 adults with an average daily census of 317 patients and By the Bay Kids provided palliative care and hospice services to 95 children, adolescents and young adults.
