2025 Women in Medicine

Why did you pursue a career in medicine?

I come from a family of scientists and social justice activists. Age-appropriate volunteerism was expected. As a junior high candy striper, I'd often hide out in labor and delivery. There was an intangible allure impelling me to remain there. It's never gone away.

What is a challenge you experience in pursuing a career in medicine?

Beyond balancing work with family is the encroachment of policy into the science and medicine we took an oath to uphold. I honor both through advocacy on many levels.

What is the most fulfilling part of your work?

Knowing this career embraces eternal learning. Specifically, the joy of cultural humility, in the care we model, teach and provide.

What strategies do you use to maintain your own well-being?

Become keenly aware of what allows you to decompress and release some endogenous dopamine. I end most days at the gym then over a dinner table with my husband (also a pediatrician) and family.

What advice would you give someone starting in the field?

Embrace the steep learning curve at each stage of your training and practice. The greatest rewards exist where we push our boundaries beyond our comfort zone. Do it!
