Why did you pursue a career in medicine?
I pursued a career in medicine to make a meaningful impact on people's lives. Early in my medical career, I was introduced to the developmental disabilities system and have been deeply inspired by the brilliance and resilience of individuals within this community. I actively participated in visionary efforts through California's Regional Center system to transition individuals from segregated state institutions into inclusive communities, where they can lead lives of liberty and opportunity, contribute meaningfully, and be valued members of society.
What is a challenge you experience in pursuing a career in medicine?
As the former Director of Clinical Services at Golden Gate Regional Center for 11 years, I encountered significant challenges in pursuing my vision of practicing medicine that fosters inclusive communities where individuals with developmental disabilities can thrive and contribute. A major obstacle was the limited translation of evidence-based interventions developed in academic centers into community practice. This gap between research and real-world application hindered the timely implementation of effective services for individuals with developmental disabilities.
What is the most fulfilling part of your work?
The most fulfilling part of my work is the opportunity to help individuals and their families, one person at a time. Each interaction allows me to make a meaningful impact on someone's life, whether it's providing support, guidance, or access to resources that empower them to thrive. Witnessing the progress and growth of individuals with developmental disabilities, and seeing their families experience relief and hope, reinforces my commitment to this field.
What strategies do you use to maintain your own well-being?
I enjoy spending time with my family, trail running with my dog, practicing yoga, and immersing myself in nature..
What advice would you give someone starting in the field?
Embrace and enjoy the journey, as the destination may differ from what we initially envisioned. Life is full of twists and turns, and every step—both the ups and downs—contributes to our growth and shapes our ultimate path.
