Pediatric Grand Rounds Webinar (CME): Toward Optimal Blood Glucose Control Using Insulin Engineering

Danny Hung-Chieh Chou, Ph.D. - Stanford School of Medicine

This presentation will discuss the decades of research efforts toward identifying insulin drugs that provide increased clinical benefits for people with diabetes and future directions toward a perfect insulin.

Speaker

Danny Hung-Chieh Chou, Ph.D.

Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, Endocrinology

Stanford University, School of Medicine

Session Description

Since the discovery of insulin in 1921, insulin has been a life-saving drug for people with type 1 diabetes. Clinical studies have demonstrated that intensive insulin therapy can limit the risk of long-term complications but this comes at the cost of acute complications such as severe hypoglycemia. To maximize the therapeutic effects of insulin, scientists have engineered insulin analogs toward achieving slower, faster and long-lasting profiles. This presentation will discuss the decades of research efforts toward identifying insulin drugs that provide increased clinical benefits for people with diabetes and future directions toward a perfect insulin.

Education Goals

  • Understand the benefits of currently available insulin analogs and the needs for improvements
  • Understand efforts in developing ultrafast-acting insulin formulations using insulin and excipient engineering
  • Understand efforts in achieving glucose-responsive insulin, which self-regulates its activity in response to glucose levels.
