Keynote: Diversity 3.0: A Required Systems Upgrade for the Next Normal

COVID-19 has disrupted undergraduate and graduate medical education in multiple ways that are not yet fully measurable. The inclination on many campuses is to stay focused on current objectives and “get through this.” However, civil unrest arising from the killing of George Floyd and ongoing protests over racial injustice presents opportunities to permanently reorient priorities and expectations of what high-quality medical education looks and feels like. 

We are challenged to reinvent the next normal for medical education through reform in curricula and admission processes for medical school students and hiring practices for faculty across the nation. This session has two goals. First, it will equip change leaders with a roadmap and heuristics to begin new efforts or to enhance existing ones. Second, it will provide methods and tools to effectively engage learners, faculty and staff to create healthy working and learning environments with emphasis on addressing racism and bias, opening and improving communication, strengthening workplace collegiality, implementing educational reforms, and sustaining a culture of accountability.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

1. Distinguish new ways of inspiring and motivating others to navigate priorities, opportunities, and potential challenges
2. Develop skills and effective language to communicate change
3. Formulate strategies to respond appropriately to competing ideologies or interests
4. Apply change management strategies to improve institutional culture and climate

Marginalization of minority medical professionals is often exacerbated by the additional responsibility of serving as the sole representative for their associated group. Through sharing of lived experiences and interactive activities, this workshop will serve to elucidate the ways in which minorities in medicine are often doubly burdened. Participants will gain an understanding of the insidious way’s that the minority tax burdens the minoritized workforce and compile powerful tools to serve as allies in ways to alleviate this tax. 

Learning Objectives:

1. Define the term minority tax
2. Identify how the minority tax impacts advancement, satisfaction, and wellbeing in medicine
3. Demonstrate the importance of allyship in alleviating the stress of the minority tax
4. Compile tools to assist allies in mitigating the minority tax burden

This workshop will provide an overview of the difference between mentorship and sponsorship, discuss why sponsorship is important to equity in career advancement, and review examples of successful sponsorship. Participants will leave the workshop with an individualized sponsorship action plan.

Implicit biases have been shown to permeate multiple steps of medical training, from medical school, residency, and fellowship selection to the formation of leadership teams. These implicit biases can compromise the goals set forth by the ACGME to increase racial and ethnic diversity in the physician and health care workforce. But how do these implicit biases in selection arise and how can we address them? In this interactive workshop, participants will explore their own privilege and implicit bias through activities focused on team formation. Participants will be guided in a group activity to reflect on their visible and invisible identities, and how these apply to their decisions regarding selecting team members. Participants will learn strategies for addressing implicit bias and develop a toolkit for helping themselves and others address biases that arise in recruitment and team formation, both in and outside of healthcare.

Learning Objectives:

1. Define the terms privilege and implicit bias
2. Identify at least two qualities or traits that lend a participant privilege
3. Develop two strategies to discuss bias/privilege in participants’ work environment after the workshop

Have you ever felt like you did not belong? In this interactive workshop, participants will explore the connection between otherness, imposter syndrome, and burnout/wellbeing. We will provide strategies on breaking down the notion of “otherness” as we try to address our imposter syndrome by fostering inclusive diversity.

Learning Objectives:

1. Define the terms imposter syndrome, burnout, otherness.
2. Discuss the impact of otherness and connection between imposter syndrome and burnout/wellbeing. 
3. Generate individual and system-level strategies to breakdown the notion of otherness to combat imposter syndrome and burnout and foster #inclusivediversity  

Plenary: Having Culturally Sensitive Mentoring Conversations

Although high quality mentoring is an important predictor of persistence for scholars pursuing STEMM careers and can influence the confidence of historically underrepresented trainees' ability to thrive, mentors typically do not receive significant training on how to optimize their mentoring relationships. In this interactive workshop for mentors, we will engage in group discussions around a case study addressing cultural diversity and inclusion and will encourage mentors to share how they might approach the case study and share how they have worked to build trust. Furthermore, stories from student mentees from historically underrepresented backgrounds will be shared to learn from their perspectives. These materials and framework have been developed by NRMN (National Research Mentoring Network) and CIMER (Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research), and some of their work will be summarized.

Learning Objectives

• To discuss in breakout groups a case study around if and how to address cultural diversity in a mentoring relationship
• To learn about the 4 basic needs of followers according to a national Gallup survey, and to gain skills and confidence to address those needs in mentoring relationships
• To learn about recent studies on the efficacies of interventions designed to enhance the skills and confidence of faculty in their mentorship
• To learn of perspectives that argue that labeling conversations related to diversity and identity as “difficult” further silences such conversations, and how we might re-frame these conversations to gain skills and confidence to engage in these topics
