Scholarly Activity

We are committed to developing clinician scientists and clinician educators and ensure that all of our fellows are actively engaged in the scientific discovery process throughout their fellowship. Fellows begin by identifying a research mentor and project in their first 6 months of fellowship training.

Unique and Flexible Opportunities for Dual Training

We strive to help fellows identify their passions and then work to provide the mentorship and resources to enable their success. 

We also take pride in being creative and have facilitated combined advanced training for many fellows. These have taken advantage of many of the amazing opportunities available at Stanford and beyond. Recent examples have included:

Fellows have presented their research at national scientific meetings held by the Pediatric Academic Societies, American Academy of Pediatrics, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the American Thoracic Society, Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Society, and the Pediatric Critical Care World Congress. 

Our faculty members have mentored fellows in basic science and translational research projects, global health, quality improvement, palliative care research, and medical education. 

Senior Faculty Basic Science programs: 

-       Investigation of the role of BFKB in pulmonary angiogenesis and vascularization, discovering novel proteins in the developing lung secretome - Alvira Lab

-       Investigation of pulmonary vascular tone regulation and oxygen sensing, regulation of pulmonary barrier functions, understanding the role of hypoxia-inducible factor-1 in lung development - Cornfield Lab 

-       Elucidating the mechanisms and management of opioid-induced tolerance/withdrawal, and developing novel measures of chronic stress - Anand Lab

The PCCM division is nested in a renowned Children's Hospital, at a leading Medical School and a premier University - thereby allowing unparalleled opportunities for research and collaboration, with access to distinguished mentors in every field for our PCCM fellows.

The Stanford Center for Clinical and Translational Research and Education sponsors a variety of mentored career development and research training programs including an NIH KL2. The Department of Pediatrics offers competitive Masters Degree Programs (Education, Health Research Policy, Biomedical Informatics, Epidemiology & Clinical Research, Community Health & Prevention Research). The PCCM Division is also involved in multi-center clinical trials in collaboration with the Pediatric Acute Lung Injury and Sepsis Investigators (PALISI) network and other leading research groups.
