The PDO team is focused on enabling PIs to develop high-quality grant proposals and secure research funding.

PDO Video Resources

Whether you’re working on your first grant proposal or you’re looking for advice on applying for a larger grant, you’re bound to have questions. The PDO team put together a series of interviews with awardees to give you ideas and inspiration on your next funding proposal.

PIs Pursuing Large or Complex Grants

To assist School of Medicine PIs and investigative teams pursuing large or complex grants, the PDO team provides proposal development support tailored to the unique needs of large grant proposals. Our goal is to increase proposal competitiveness and decrease the administrative burden of application preparation. Support for large grants includes:

  • Identify suitable funding opportunities
  • Create comprehensive document checklist aligned with the requirements of the funding announcement
  • Managing the proposal preparation and submission process
  • Coordinating document sharing and version control
  • Writing non-technical proposal sections
  • Drafting letters of support and routing for signature
  • Facilitating discussions about institutional support for the proposed Program or Center
  • Managing the online application
  • Helping teams fill gaps in administrative support to ensure a smooth proposal preparation process
  • Coordinating expert proposal reviews

General Proposal Support

The PDO provides valuable templates and links to support School of Medicine faculty who are submitting research project grants (e.g., an NIH R01 or similar) with the goal of increasing proposal quality and competitiveness. The types of proposal development support that we most commonly provide include:

  • Identifying potential funding opportunities
  • Providing templates and examples of administrative sections (e.g., Facilities and Other Resources)
  • Editing administrative documents (e.g., biosketches) to maximize effectiveness
  • Analyzing proposal critiques and providing strategic advice on proposal resubmission

Workshops

The PDO team is available to present workshops on request. Please reach out to us to request a workshop for your unit. Examples of topics covered in our previous workshops include:

  • Applying for Center Grants and when to start the process.
  • Training for early career faculty to search for appropriate funding opportunities and to understand the requirements of a funding announcement.

In addition, the PDO contributes to the Stanford Route to Getting Grants (R2G2) seminar series. R2G2 is a collaboratively organized monthly seminar series specially designed for junior faculty. Sessions cover all aspects of grant writing, delivered through panel sessions, workshops, and focused talks.

How to Request Support

To get started, please contact the PDO team to discuss support for your proposal. From there, we will develop a plan based on the unique needs of your team. Typically, we can offer more comprehensive support if you contact us early in the proposal planning process.
