Patient & Family Engaged Medical Education
Our Mission
Authentically engage patients, families, and caregivers in medical education.
Our Vision
Patient, family, and caregiver perspectives are included at the exploration, development, and implementation stages of curriculum design, moving their role from that of “end user” to that of designer of the hearts and minds of future clinicians.
Our Goals
PARTNER with a dedicated corps of representatives who ensure that patient-centered perspectives shape our programs.
Convene a COMMUNITY of PRACTICE that exchanges ideas, models and best practices for amplifying the patient voice in medical education.
Measure the IMPACT of patient, family, and caregiver involvement in teaching, mentorship and evaluation.
Our Evolution
The inclusion of patients in medical education stretches back to the origins of the profession, yet their roles have evolved profoundly in recent decades. We now recognize the depth of learning that emerges when their lived experience informs every layer of education. We believe the voices of our entire community have a place in the training of future clinicians.
Since 2015, our pilot programs—spanning medical, PA, and undergraduate courses—have invited patients, families, and caregivers to co-design, teach, and mentor. This work continues to expand, mirroring national and global movements to humanize and strengthen clinical training. We know that this work is not ours alone. Individuals and groups across our School of Medicine, and schools and communities like ours across our country and the world, are influencing the practice of future clinicians in both small and large ways. We aim to learn from others in the field and invite others to join us.
