About the Galli Prize in Pathology

The Galli Prize in Pathology is an award offered by Stanford Pathology recognizing exceptional research by a medical student, MD/PhD student, or post-sophomore pathology fellow in the United States. Named in honor of former department chair Dr. Stephen J. Galli, MD, this prize celebrates outstanding achievement in pathology research as selected by a committee of Stanford faculty. The awardee will receive a $1,000 prize and will be invited to present their research at Stanford Pathology’s annual research retreat.

Applications should stress the scientific innovation and medical impact of the candidate’s research, be no more than one page, and include reprints or preprints as appropriate. Please include your name, school of medicine, current year of training, email address, and the name and email address of your research mentor(s).

Selection will be made by August and the Stanford Pathology Research Retreat will be held in the fall of 2026 (retreat date to be determined). Zach completed his undergraduate degree in biochemistry at Colgate University and is currently a 6th-year MD/PhD candidate at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed his PhD in Benjamin Izar's lab studying the intersection of T cell engineering and human genetics. His work leverages cutting-edge mutagenesis screening platforms in primary human cells to decode the impact of genetic variation on immune cell behavior. He is supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health and the Melanoma Research Foundation.
