Stanford Pathology Research Retreat 2026

The Pathology Department Research Retreat will be located at the David and Joan Traitel Building of Hoover Institution. Our date is Friday, October 30, 2026. We look forward to seeing you at the retreat!

We welcome all Pathology Faculty, Clinical Educators & Instructors, Fellows & Residents, Trainees, Undergraduate/Graduate Students, Postdocs and Research staff: Life Science Research Professional, Clinical Research Coordinator, Lab Assistant, Life Scientist Technician, Basic Life Research Scientist, Sr. Basic Life Research Scientist, Research Engineers, Research Data Analyst, and more. Registration is on a first come, first serve basis. Due to space and capacity limitations, individuals with Secondary, Affiliate, and Business Staff Appointments are invited to attend virtually.

This year's retreat will be live-streamed

Even if you are unable to attend in person, we encourage you to register for the retreat. By doing so, you'll receive all the necessary information to log in and join us virtually on the day of the event.

Schedule of events

• Keynote Speaker: Irving L. Weissman, MD
• Flash Talks — 3-5 minute research presentations.
• Abstract/Poster Presentations* —in addition a digital version of your abstract/poster will be available to preview for the week leading up to the day of the retreat on the retreat website.
  
• Pathology Art Contest —vote for your favorite research artwork which will be displayed throughout the event.
• A digital version of your abstract/poster will be available to preview for the week leading up to the day of the retreat on the retreat website. This preview session accounts for 50% of the review process of your abstract. Presenters must also present their abstract poster in person at one of the poster sessions at the retreat.

Awards Notice

This year, due to restrictions on providing disparate compensation or gifts to house staff or members of the unionized graduate student and postdoctoral fellow organizations, we are unable to offer prizes for poster presentations. 

*Certification recognition are to be awarded in seven categories:

• Students
• Postdoctoral Fellows
• Research Associates
• CP Residents
• AP Residents
• Clinical Fellows
• Health Disparity Research
   

PLEASE NOTE: The committee starts its evaluation process by reviewing the abstracts submitted 3-4 weeks before the day of the retreat. Those that are ranked high in the pool of abstracts submitted per category are then reviewed further in person on retreat day to identify final winners.

*Prizes will be a certification of recognition; please read the eligibility agreement below:

*The research was done within the Department of Pathology, either as a graduate student, rotating medical student, post-sophomore fellow, resident, clinical fellow, postdoctoral fellow, research staff in Pathology, instructor, including clinical educator, or senior research scientist. The main Pl for your research/abstract is a faculty member or instructor from the Department of Pathology.

Join us in the Pathology Art Contest!

This unique opportunity invites participants to showcase their creativity by submitting a digital image or video drawn from their clinical or research work. To ensure confidentiality, all submissions must be de-identified and visually compelling. If you choose to manipulate your image, please apply the same technique uniformly across the entire piece. Don’t miss your chance to contribute—submit your artwork by Friday, October 16, 2026, at 5 PM PST.

Whether you are attending or plan to present an abstract/poster at this year's retreat, you must register. Space is limited and registration will close once we fill to capacity! Registration will close on Wednesday, September 30, 2026: 5 PM PST.

Registration is available on a first‑come, first‑served basis. Priority will be given to those who hold a Primary Appointment in the Department of Pathology or who are lab members assigned to the Department of Pathology.
