The Angelo Lab employs a method known as Multiplexed Ion Beam Imaging (MIBI) that uses secondary ion mass spectrometry to image antibodies tagged with isotopically pure elemental metal reporters. MIBI is capable of analyzing up to 100 targets simultaneously over a five-log dynamic range. Thus, MIBI enables highly multiplexed and sensitive immunohistochemical analysis of complex tissues. Our lab applies MIBI to questions in the fields of cancer biology, infectious diseases, immune tolerance, allergy, and the maternal-fetal interface in addition to technology and methods development.

The Axelrod Lab is investigating how genes orchestrate the amazing processes of morphogenesis during development. Once cells adopt a fate, how do they acquire the correct morphology to carry out their functions? How do they know their position and orientation within the tissue? We are using genetic, molecular and cell biological analyses in both the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, and in the mouse, to address some specific examples of these questions. These studies will provide insight into how errors in these processes give rise to a range of developmental anomalies, and how they may contribute to cancers.

Our goal is to understand the mechanisms regulating the development of human systems (both embryonic and adult). In particular, we are interested in clarifying the roles of both protein coding genes as well as pathobiology (disease state or pathogen) known to be uniquely human – therefore, not analogously studied in model organisms.

Proteases play key roles in the regulation of normal and pathological processes ranging from cell division to invasion of a host cell by a pathogen. Our laboratory is interested in developing and applying chemical tools to dissect the functional roles of proteases in a number of human health conditions.

Our research group is made up of a mix of synthetic organic chemists, biochemists, and cell biologists.

The Boyd lab studies healthy and pathogenic human immune responses in the context of vaccination, infectious diseases, and allergy, using a combination of antigen receptor sequence analysis, antibody functional characterization, and cellular immunology experiments. We are located in the Department of Pathology and are affiliated with the Sean N. Parker Center for Allergy and Asthma Research, and the Computational Immunology Graduate Program at Stanford University.

We are interested in fundamental aspects of cell-cell recognition, migration and development with the mammalian immune system as a model. We use molecular and genetic approaches to study the development and trafficking of white blood cells (e.g. lymphocytes, dendritic cells), including their interactions with the endothelial lining of blood vessels at sites of leukocyte extravasation, their chemotactic responses in tissues, and their programming by environmental factors in lymphoid tissues and within mucosal surfaces. A complementary interest is in the genetic and environmental control of endothelial cell specialization, which determines the sites, pace and specificity of leukocyte recruitment from the blood.

Our laboratory studies the molecular pathogenesis of cancer.  We have discovered several genes that are damaged by chromosomal translocations in human leukemias.  We are currently investigating the normal functions of these genes and their contributions to cancer employing a variety of experimental approaches that include biochemical techniques and in vitro cellular transformation assays as well as genetic analyses using transgenic and knockout mouse models.

Our brains are home to a myriad of cell types acting in concert to generate thoughts, behaviors, emotions, and memories. In neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, specific cell subpopulations become susceptible to pathological damage and eventually die. Remarkably, some neuronal subtypes are particularly vulnerable, while others appear to preserve their integrity and function even at late stages of disease.

We are exploring the role of chromatin regulation in vertebrate development using genetic, proteomic and genomic approaches in mice. Our studies suggest that an important mechanism for production of specific chroamtin landscapes during development arises from the combinatorial assembly of chromatin remodeling complexes.

We study gut microbial metabolism to improve human health. One of the key ways that the gut microbiome impacts human health is through the production of bioactive metabolites. By understanding how microbes produce these molecules, we aim to develop new approaches to promote human health and treat disease. Our laboratory employs bacterial genetics, metabolomics, and gnotobiotic mouse colonization to uncover the chemistry that underlies host-microbe interactions in the gut.

The immune system impacts a wide range of processes in most tissues and organs. By applying new and more precise analytical tools for assessing this system in mice and humans, we have been successful at identifying disease-promoting immune abnormalities. By targeting the cells responsible for or affected by these abnormalities, we have succeeded in reversing the abnormalities and ameliorating the diseases they cause.

Our lab studies the mechanisms by which cells and organisms respond to genetic change. We primarily make use of the nematode C. elegans in our experimental studies. C. elegans is small, easily cultured, and can readily be made to accept foreign DNA or RNA. The results of such experiments have outlined a number of concerted responses that recognize (and in most cases work to silence) the foreign nucleic acid.

The focus of the Foung Laboratory is to define immune correlates of protection against hepatitis C virus and other viral pathogens.

More specifically, our goal is to define protective humoral immunity to viral pathogens through the isolation, biochemical and functional characterization of broadly neutralizing human or nonhuman primate monoclonal antibodies.

The goals of Dr. Galli’s laboratory are to develop and employ genetic approaches in mice to understand the regulation of mast cell and basophil development and the expression of mast cell and basophil function, and to elucidate the roles of these cells in health and disease.

In parallel with these mouse studies, we investigate the roles of mast cells in human health and disease by conducting studies of human mast cells, or by analyzing specimens derived from patients with asthma or other disorders in which mast cell have been implicated.

Computational biology develops and applies tools to suggest answers to biological questions that can be answered through analysis of large complex datasets. We use these tools to study humans in both health and disease, by exploiting natural variation across large cohorts of samples.

Much of our work is in cancer and neurodegenerative disease, but we have collaborations in various areas.

We develop tools for less invasive or earlier diagnostics. We study cell-free nucleic acids from minimally invasive biopsies that contain terabytes of epigenetic and genetic data. This genre of biomarkers has already proven to be useful for fetal, transplant, microbial, and cancer diagnostics, yet we are still only beginning to understand this data in the context of human disease.

We work closely with the Molecular Pathology Laboratory at Stanford to develop new clinical testing and find new biomarkers.

Our lab studies somatic mutations that are prevalent in the aging population which cause clonal hematopoiesis, a disorder that increases the risk of blood cancer, cardiovascular disease, and overall mortality.
