Post-Sophomore/Junior Fellowship
Overview
The Department of Pathology at Stanford offers a 12-month medical student fellowship. Applicants must be currently enrolled in a US medical school and complete this fellowship prior to medical school graduation, either between their pre-clinical and clinical years or (preferably) after their first clinical year of medical school. The goal of the program is to offer a broad exposure to the practice of pathology. A key feature of the program is flexibility to accommodate the individual interests of each student; however, the typical program consists of six months of research and six months of clinical service. The usual start date is July 1.
Kelly Ernst, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor of Pathology (Cytopathology); Co-Director, Post-Sophomore/Junior Fellowship
John Higgins, MD
Professor of Pathology
Director, Anatomic and Clinical Residency Training Program; Co-Director, Post-Sophomore/Junior Fellowship
Clinical Services
With appropriate orientation and oversight, fellows spend six months on clinical service with responsibilities similar to those of a first-year resident rotating on autopsy, breast pathology, cytology, frozen section, gastrointestinal pathology, genitourinary pathology, gynecologic pathology, head and neck pathology, pediatric pathology, and/or soft tissue pathology. At least four weeks of elective time is available for fellows to explore an area of subspecialty interest from those previously listed, or from an expanded selection of both anatomic and clinical pathology services including the following: clinical chemistry, cytogenetics, dermatopathology, flow cytometry, forensic pathology, hematopathology, microbiology, neuropathology, renal pathology, and virology.
Research
Fellows are encouraged to identify a research mentor for a longitudinal project. The research mentor need not be in the pathology department. For Stanford medical students, program research time may in part satisfy the requirements of a Scholarly Concentration (SC), and Stanford medical students are encouraged to identify a mentor and submit a proposal to the Committee on Medical Student Scholarship (CMSS) before the beginning of the post-sophomore year fellowship on July 1 for funds which can supplement the stipend.
