Overview

The Laboratory Genetics & Genomics Fellowship Program is an ABMGG Clinical Laboratory Fellowship that is accredited by ACGME.

The fellowship program seeks to attract individuals of diverse backgrounds and experience interested in pursuing careers in medical genetics. The fellowship is open to holders of PhD, MD or MD/PhD degrees. Fellows must be eligible to work in the United States.

Preferred experience: 2 years in clinical cytogenetics or clinical molecular genetics laboratory testing or postdoctoral research in one of these areas
Strong candidates have been involved in related orgranizations such as ACMG or CLINGEN

*One of these letters must be from your current supervisor, thesis advisor, or department/division director, or MD residency program director

Translational research activities are aimed at the development of new laboratory testing approaches for the diagnosis and monitoring of patients with inborn errors of metabolism. In particular, a tandem-mass spectrometry (MS/MS)-based test for glutathione, an important antioxidant, is being applied to the evaluation of patients with various metabolic disorders including mitochondrial myopathies. Results of these studies will further our understanding of the pathophysiology of metabolic diseases, with the ultimate aim of improving patient testing and developing new theraputic strategies.

Fei Dong, MD

Dr. Dong is the Director of the Stanford Molecular Genetic Pathology Laboratory at Stanford Health Care. His clinical interests include the implementation and interpretation of laboratory developed tests in diagnosis and patient care. Previous accomplishments include the development of novel bioinformatics algorithms to infer microsatellite instability and allogeneic contamination from cancer sequencing data. Before arriving at Stanford, Dr. Dong was on faculty at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School for nine years, where he established a track record in education and mentorship and was the recipient of both the Anatomic Pathology and Clinical Pathology resident teaching awards. Dr. Dong has served on national/international committees for the Association for Molecular Pathology, the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute, and the College of American Pathologists and serves on the editorial boards of multiple academic journals, including the Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, the Journal of Molecular Diagnostics, and Modern Pathology.

Wei Gu, MD, PhD

Assistant Professor of Pathology (Clinical Genomics)

Wei Gu, MD, PhD, is a physician, engineer, and scientist whose research focus is methylation classification within the area of molecular pathology. He has pioneered technologies in cell-free DNA 'liquid biopsy' testing, CRISPR diagnostics, clinical metagenomic sequencing, non-invasive prenatal testing, and COVID diagnostics. Dr. Gu has received awards from the Burroughs Wellcome Career Award and the National Cancer Institute. As a physician, he is a board-certified molecular and clinical pathologist and maintains a clinical practice at Stanford Healthcare.
