Hematopathology Fellowship
Overview
The Stanford Hematopathology Fellowship includes broad experience in neoplastic and non-neoplastic hematopathology diagnosis, incorporation of state of the art ancillary studies for diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutic targets, clinical collaboration with world leaders in hematology and oncology, and numerous opportunities for clinical and translational research. We serve a broad patient base at Stanford Health and Stanford Children’s Health, and also see cases submitted in consultation by pathologists and/or oncologists from many parts of the United States and abroad.
Fellows gain extensive experience in diagnosis of a variety of neoplastic and non-neoplastic lymph node and bone marrow conditions, including the integrated use of immunohistochemical, flow cytometry, cytogenetic and molecular ancillary studies. Fellows also gain experience in evaluation of both routine and rare coagulation and red cell disorders.
Fellow rotations include the hematopathology consultation service, the bone marrow and flow cytometry service, molecular pathology and cytogenetics, coagulation and red blood cell special studies, and elective time which may be devoted to additional clinical experience or to research.
The fellow educational experience includes one on one and small group signout experience, dedicated small group microscope sessions and fellow journal clubs, and didactic lecture series. Fellows will gain teaching experience in undergraduate and graduate medical education contexts. Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in tumor boards, to attend grand round lecture series and regional pathology society meetings, and to submit abstracts to a national pathology or hematology society conference.
Stanford establishes PGY levels for new fellows based on the successful completion of all prerequisite training required for entry into your fellowship program. Stanford does not recognize additional training beyond the prerequisite training requirements when establishing the PGY level for entry into the program.
Hematopathology Fellowship Program Directors
Sebastian Fernandez-Pol, MD, PhD
Clinical Associate Professor of Pathology (Hematopathology)
Director, Hematopathology Fellowship Program
Co-Director, Clinical Immunopathology Laboratory
Dr. Sebastian Fernandez-Pol is an academic hematopathologist with fellowship training in hematopathology and dermatopathology. He has a particular interest in improving diagnostic accuracy for cutaneous lymphoproliferative disorders. Dr. Fernandez-Pol received his B.A. in chemistry with a concentration in biochemistry from the Washington University in St. Louis in 2003, his MD and PhD from Northwestern University in 2013, and completed his anatomic pathology and clinical pathology residency, hematopathology fellowship, and dermatopathology fellowship at Stanford University in 2019.
Joshua Menke, MD
Clinical Associate Professor of Pathology
Associate Director, Hematopathology Felllowship Program
Dr. Joshua Menke completed his hematopathology fellowship at Stanford and cytopathology fellowship at University of California San Francisco (UCSF). His clinical and research interests lie at the intersection of hematopathology, cytopathology and advanced single cell and cell free diagnostic techniques. As Associate Director of the Flow Cytometry lab at Stanford, Dr. Menke will be developing and validating new minimal residual disease assays for detecting low levels of hematopoietic and lymphoid neoplasms in the post-treatment setting. Dr. Menke is the receipient of the Paul E. Standjord Young Investigator Award from the Academy of Clinical Laboratory Scientists and Laurance J. Marton Award for Excellence in Research from UCSF for his translational work on CALR mutations at the UCSF Molecular Diagnostics Laboroatory.
Hematopathology Faculty
Dita Gratzinger, MD, PhD
Professor of Pathology
Associate Performance Improvement Leader for Anatomic Pathology & Genomics
Dr. Dita Gratzinger is a hematopathologist who is dedicated to excellent patient care, to educating the hematopathologists of tomorrow, and to improving both by harnessing strengths across institutional and disciplinary lines. Dr. Gratzinger studies the architecture of supporting cells in the microenvironment as well as diagnosis of lymphoma on small volume specimens, and has a special interest in the role of patient-specific factors in manifestation of hematolymphoid disease. She is the founding chair of a multi-institutional consortium, the Cyto-Heme Interinstitutional Collaborative, which brings together hematopathologists, cytopathologists, and oncologists to optimize the benefits of small volume biopsy to lymphoma patients. She also heads the Stanford hematopathology fellowship program and is leading an initiative to empower independence during hematopathology training through entrustable professional activities. Dr. Gratzinger received her B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley, her M.D. and PhD from Yale University, and completed her anatomic pathology residency, surgical pathology fellowship, and hematopathology fellowship at Stanford University.
Jean Oak, MD, PhD
Clinical Associate Professor of Pathology (Hematopathology)
Dr. Oak received her MD and PhD from University of California, Irvine, and completed her anatomic pathology and clinical pathology residency, hematopathology fellowship, and transfusion medicine fellowship at Stanford University. Her research and clinical interests include clinical assay development for tumor immunophenotyping, lymphocyte subset monitoring, and immunotherapy target antigen assessment in a variety of hematologic and immunologic disorders. As director of a clinical flow cytometry laboratory, she oversees the design, validation, and implementation of various immunophenotyping assays in addition to ensuring quality assurance and regulatory compliance for CLIA certification.
