Palo Alto Parkinson's Support Group Meeting Videos and Presentations

In January 2026, we heard from Tanya Garside, co-author of "I Will Not Be Shaken: Devotions for People with Parkinson's and Care Partners."  She is a care partner to her husband Jeff, who has Parkinson's disease (PD) and is the main author of the book.  Tanya described this book of devotions,  addressed things she has learned as a care partner, and then answered audience questions.  

In the book, there are 106 daily "devotions," most of which are a single page.  Each day includes some scripture from the Bible selected by Jeff, then Jeff's "meditation on" or discussion of the scripture generally from the point of view of someone with PD, then Tanya's "care partner response," followed by a journaling prompt.  She shares two examples of the devotions in her slides.  One of the journaling prompts is:  "What is something good that has happened in your life because of Parkinson's?"  She and Jeff use the devotions to have "hard conversations" about their lives with PD.  Tanya says that she tries to see PD through Jeff's eyes.

In this November 2025 webinar, Tricia Catiggay, OT, occupational therapist, Stanford Healthcare, Farewell to Falls, addresses risk factors for falls, behavioral changes to prevent falls, five quick home modifications to prevent falls, and the importance of a medication review (by an MD).  She notes five exercises for fall prevention — seated ankle pumps, seated ankle circles, straightening your legs while seated, marching (either seated or standing), and standing up from a chair.  Ms. Catiggay describes Stanford's programs for fall prevention — Farewell to Falls, Matter of Balance, and Bingocize.  The latter two are offered in the community. In addition to doing a medication review, she encourages us to speak with our physician for a blood pressure check; Vitamin D check; and referral to physical therapy an occupational therapy.

In this October 2025 webinar, Dr. Gaurav Chattree, a movement disorder specialist at Stanford, presents the latest updates in Parkinson's disease treatments. He covers disease-modifying therapies under investigation, including those targeting alpha-synuclein (prasinezumab moving to Phase 3, other antibodies, vaccines), LRRK2 inhibitors, ambroxol, anti-inflammatory drugs, and gene therapy. He also discusses newly-released symptomatic therapies like subcutaneous infusions (Vilev and Fycompa), focused ultrasound, and adaptive deep brain stimulation, plus treatments in the pipeline including new oral medications for dyskinesias, stem cell therapies entering Phase 3, and NBM stimulation for cognitive symptoms. Dr. Chattree emphasizes that exercise remains the only proven disease-modifying intervention currently available.

In this September 2025 webinar, Stanford occupational therapist Alyssa Nolff provides comprehensive guidance on driving safety for individuals with Parkinson's disease. She explains how physical symptoms like rigidity and tremor, cognitive changes, and visual issues can impact driving ability, while walking through California's specific DMV requirements for medical condition disclosure and the driver safety branch review process. Nolff details Stanford's clinical driving assessment program, which includes computer-based visual processing tests, driving simulator evaluations, and neuropsychological assessments to determine driving safety. The presentation also covers practical options including certified driving rehabilitation specialists who can modify vehicles for continued safe driving, as well as guidance on making the difficult decision to retire from driving when safety becomes a concern.

In August 2025, we heard from autonomic specialist Mitchell Miglis, MD, with Stanford Neurology, on the topic of orthostatic low blood pressure in parkinsonian syndromes – Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple System Atrophy, and Lewy Body Dementia.  Dr. Miglis addressed causes, triggers, symptoms, lifestyle changes, and treatment options.  

This was a joint webinar with Stanford and Brain Support Network.  The moderator was Candy Welch, with Brain Support Network’s MSA Caregiver Support Group. The webinar was also co-hosted by the Multiple System Atrophy Center of Excellence at Stanford, which Dr. Miglis directs.

Prerana Acharyya, Stanford's Bronte-Stewart Lab clinical research coordinator, spoke about three studies.  Second is the SPRING study for those who have a Medtronic Percept PC or RC DBS implant (or will be getting this device) and experience freezing of gait.  Third is the NBM study which involves those interested in having DBS (deep brain stimulation) surgery in both two areas, the STN and the NBM.  (The NBM is thought to play a role in the connection between cognition and motor.)

Daria Shariff, Stanford clinical research coordinator, spoke about a joint study between Stanford and SRI International, part of which is conducted at the SRI office in Menlo Park, CA.  The study is about sleep and cognition.  It involves wearing an Oura ring and wrist device while sleeping at home for a two-week period.  Researchers are looking for those with PD and healthy controls to participate.

Jiwon Yeon, PhD, Stanford post-doctoral fellow in Psychology and Neurology, spoke about a study of eye movement behavior in PD and parkinsonism.  Both the eye muscles and cognition affect eye movements.  In the study, participants wear special eye movement tracking glasses and perform some tasks, including walking for about five minutes.  Those who normally wear eyeglasses when they walk cannot participate in this study.  Participants must be able to walk independently.  (Walking with a cane or walker is fine.)  One thing she did not mention in the talk was that participants cannot be color blind.  And, she was a little unclear about participant compensation:  total compensation is $50.

Yasmine Kehnemouyi, MD, Stanford spoke about two studies looking at the autonomic system.  She briefly described the gut-brain axis.  The first study, called the PhD Study, actually has two arms.  In the first arm, two devices are attached to the participant (either in the clinic or in their home, if the participant lives near Stanford campus).  The devices are worn during sleep and wake.  In the second arm, participants wear several devices and are testing in the clinic for about 2.5 hours.

The second study, called the BioX Study, has participants wearing electrodes on their abdomen.  For both studies, those with PD and healthy controls can participate.

At the regular, Wednesday, September 13th virtual support group meeting, we heard briefly from Megan Rao, MPH, with Stanford Health Care.  She gave an overview of Stanford's Neuroscience Wellness classes.

One of those classes is a PD-specific exercise class that is held virtually, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:30-3:30pm.  The instructor is Yue Whelchel.  At our regular September meeting, Ms. Whelchel led us in lots of exercises helpful to those with Parkinson's.  She began seated (in a chair without wheels) and then stood up, occasionally holding on to a sturdy chair.  She used small weights.  The class lasted about 45 minutes.  Check out the recording!

Topic:  Orthostatic Hypotension in PD

He described what causes the sign of orthostatic hypotension, how the sign manifests, and treatment (both pharmacological and non-pharmacological).  There were lots of good questions from attendees.

Dr. Miglis shared this "orthostatics log," for tracking blood pressure at home.  The basic measurements are taken lying flat and then after standing in place for three minutes.  Measurements should be taken at different times of day.

At the regular Wednesday, July 13th virtual support group meeting, the speaker provided an overview of research and clinical trials for a non-invasive, vibrotactile coordinated reset stimulation for treating PD.  

The speaker was:

Peter Tass, MD, PhD, Stanford Neurosurgery.

PD symptoms are associated with abnormal brain activity -- in particular, abnormal synchronization within large neuronal populations. In detailed computational studies done by Dr. Tass and his lab, he has shown that coordinated reset stimulation induces long-lasting desynchronization by modifying the structure and function of connections between neurons. The corresponding therapeutic effects were validated in Parkinsonian monkeys as well as in Parkinson’s patients treated with deep brain electrical CR stimulation. Now Dr. Tass is studying the effects on those with PD who are wearing "gloves" that deliver weak, non-painful vibratory CR bursts to the fingertips.  If you are interested in participating in future clinical trials, please email Dr. Tass's team.  If true, mention that you live in the Palo Alto area.

At the regular Wednesday, May 11th virtual support group meeting, the topic was "Keep Moving with Jen", with a focus on the fundamentals of exercise for Parkinson's.

Jen Larsen, PD exercise specialist.

Jen gave a short​ presentation on the fundamentals of exercise for Parkinson's. Jen believes that PD movement programs should challenge participants both physically and mentally. Then Jen invited everyone to participate in a one-hour PD exercise class, highlighting several different approaches to Parkinson's-specific movement, including PWR!, LSVT-BIG, and PD Warrior. She started off with stretches that people can do in bed each morning. Then she had a seated workout, followed by a standing workout. The workout focused on flexibility, balance, and strength. Jen offers virtual and in-person PD exercise classes on the Peninsula. Plus, she has a YouTube page of 60 exercise videos.

At the regular Wednesday, November 10th virtual support group meeting, the topic was cutting edge, basic science research into PD going on at Stanford. The guest speaker was:

Birgitt Schüle, MD, researcher with Stanford Pathology.

She spoke on “Alpha-synuclein as a therapeutic target for Parkinson’s disease: challenges and opportunities.” Dr. Schüle focuses on medical genetics and stem cell modeling to unlock disease mechanisms and pathways leading to neurodegeneration in Parkinson’s disease and related disorders, and to develop new therapeutic strategies to advance precision medicine. The line of research she is pursuing runs counter to current scientific concepts. She is investigating whether common genes and pathways underlie both neurodegeneration and neurodevelopment. This knowledge could help guide future therapeutic strategies of lowering alpha-synuclein in Parkinson’s disease and could provide insights into early, potentially reversible disease mechanisms critical for both neurodevelopment and neurodegeneration.
