Stress and Pain Medicine Study

About the Study

We are studying potential factors affecting pain mediation use such as stress, thoughts, and feelings. Funding for this study is provided by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).


What does the study involve for participants?

Study participants will receive up to $120 compensation for successful completion of all study procedures.

This study has two parts:

Part 1:

Eligible participants will be invited to the Stanford Systems Neuroscience and Pain Lab for a study lasting up to 2.5 hours. This lab visit will comprise of donation of a small sample of blood (7 mL), donations of saliva samples, cold water sensory testing, and possibly reading of short statements.

Part 2:

Participants who complete Part 1 will be asked to complete a 2-5 minute at-home survey for 14 days and collect at-home saliva samples.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Have chronic pain for 3 months or more
  • Have been taking opioid pain medications for 3 months or more
  • Are not taking steroids or benzodiazepine medications daily
  • Are not pregnant
  • Able to donate small blood sample (blood draw with 7 mL amount)
