Neck Pain and Low Back Pain Research Studies

About the Study

The purpose of these studies is to use advanced brain, spinal cord, and muscle magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to better understand how pain and spinal conditions affect the body. The goal is to discover measurable signs that may one day guide more effective treatment strategies for people living with spinal injuries and chronic pain.

Who We Need

Recruitment began in 2024 and is currently ongoing. The team is enrolling both patients with spinal cord and nerve root compression and individuals without spinal conditions, allowing for meaningful comparisons.

To Qualify

  • 20-79 years old
  • Fluent in English
  • Have no contraindications to MRI

Your Participation

Participation in our studies may involve up to 3 study visits at our lab. Visits can run between two to four hours in length.

A wide range of data is collected. Participants complete questionnaires and undergo physical exams, sensory testing, and motor assessments. MRI provides a window into the body and interactions between the nervous system and muscle. Together, these measures help researchers map the relationships between spinal conditions, motor function, sensory perception, and pain.

By gathering this information, researchers hope to reveal new insights into how pain manifests in people with spinal conditions and how it affects their quality of life. The aim is to identify markers that can help predict surgical outcomes and guide clinical decisions. This work has the potential to help doctors provide more personalized care for those navigating spinal injuries and pain.
