Donald E. King Visiting Professor

We extend our deepest gratitude to Dr. Brian Cole for his invaluable insights and contributions during our Grand Rounds session. His expertise and generosity of time truly enriched our community.

Dr. Brian Cole is a distinguished Professor of Orthopaedics, Anatomy, and Cell Biology, as well as the Dr. Ralph & Marian C. Falk Professor of Biochemistry at Rush University. He serves as the Associate Chairman of Orthopaedics and Section Head at the Cartilage Research and Restoration Center and occupies the position of Chair of Surgery at Rush Oak Park Hospital. As the Managing Partner at Midwest Orthopaedics, Dr. Cole brings extensive expertise to his practice.

His leadership in the field is notable, having served as past President of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and currently as President of the NBA Physicians Society. In addition to having written over 1000 papers and 20 text books on a variety of topics, conditions, and cases, Dr. Cole is also recognized for his role as a team physician for several prominent athletic organizations, including the Chicago Bulls, Chicago White Sox, Chicago Red Stars (NWSL), Chicago Dogs, and DePaul University. He is also known for his 10-year contribution to the ESPN radio tallk show Sports Medicine Weekly, and now the Sports Medicine Weekly Podcast.

Eugene Bleck Visiting Professor

Dr. Eric Edmonds joins us as this year's Eugene Bleck Visiting Professor. Dr. Edmonds is a distinguished orthopedic surgeon at Rady Children’s Hospital–San Diego, where he serves as Vice Chief of the Orthopaedic Surgery Division, Medical Staff Orthopedic Surgery Section Chief, Director of Orthopedic Research, and Director of the 360 Sports Medicine Program. He is also a Full Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of California, San Diego.

Dr. Edmonds specializes in youth sports medicine and musculoskeletal trauma, combining clinical expertise with an extensive research background. He has authored over 160 peer-reviewed publications, contributed to more than 20 book chapters, and his work has earned over 3,800 citations (H-index: 36, i10-index: 91).

He actively collaborates in several major multicenter research groups, including:

ROCK – Osteochondritis Dissecans of the Knee

ROCKET – Osteochondritis Dissecans of the Elbow

FACTS – Clavicle Fractures

MEMO – Medial Epicondyle Fractures

PLUTO – Pediatric ACL Studies

Dr. Edmonds currently serves as the Immediate Past President of PRISM (Pediatric Research in Sports Medicine Society) and is the President-Elect of POSNA (Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America).

Beyond his clinical and research achievements, Dr. Edmonds is deeply committed to expanding access to healthcare for Hispanic patients and supporting underrepresented medical professionals. He actively mentors undergraduate and medical students and has completed a mini-MBA in healthcare to further his understanding of the business side of medicine.

Outside the hospital, Dr. Edmonds enjoys exploring the world with his wife and two children. Whether embarking on a 7,000-mile road trip to visit national parks or spending weekends backpacking, jeeping, rockhounding, fossil hunting, birding, or studying native edible plants, he brings the same curiosity and passion for discovery to every adventure.

Farshid Guilak, PhD honored our department, presenting on the topic, "Engineering New Cell-Based Therapies for Arthritis."

Dr. Guilak is the Mildred B. Simon Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Washington University in St. Louis and Director of Research at Shriners Hospitals for Children. Additionally he has a highly regarded national and international presence as an American Engineer and Orthopedic Researcher. 

We are grateful for his time and for sharing his renowned knowledge and expertise with our department.
