CLINICAL SITES

While the majority of fellowship training takes place at the Byers Eye Institute, the fellow will also see patients and operate at various facilities to gain exposure to different patient populations and benefit from the diverse skill-sets of our retina faculty.

Byers Eye Institute

The Mothership of Stanford Retina, this recently-designed building sits on a beautiful campus just 2 miles from Stanford University, located conveniently next to the highway with ample free parking. This clinical facility houses the Department of Ophthalmology clinics and has an ophthalmology-dedicated, state-of-the-art ambulatory surgical center where the bulk of the retina surgery takes place. General retina and subspecialty rotations including ocular oncology, uveitis, retinal degenerations and pediatric retina are held here. Didactic lectures and grand rounds are held in our conference facilities.

Mary M. and Sash A. Spencer Center for Vision Research

Located across the street from the Byers Eye Institute, this newly dedicated building is our hub for innovative research in advanced clinical imaging and clinical studies. Fellows have ample opportunities to collaborate in the research labs of Drs. Diana Do, Quan Nguyen, and Alfredo Dubra

Stanford Medical Center

Located 2 miles from Byers Eye Institute, this is the premier medical center in the region and recognized for its innovations both nationally and internationally. In 2019, it underwent an expansion to 824,000-square-feet. The seven-story building is comprised of 368 private patient rooms, 28 state-of-the-art operating rooms, and serves as the only Level 1 trauma center between San Jose and San Francisco. Our fellows participate in patient care activities on inpatients and in the emergency room setting. Select surgical cases are performed at the main Stanford operating rooms including ocular trauma and complicated vitreoretinal surgery. Ocular oncology brachytherapy surgery is performed here with Dr. Prithvi Mruthyunjaya.

Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital

Adjacent to Stanford Medical Center, this internationally recognized center for pediatric medical care houses the pediatric retina surgical service headed by Dr. Darius Moshfeghi. The pediatric nursery and NICU are the sites for the extensive retinopathy of prematurity treatment programs and the SUNDROP ROP screening network — the premier tele-ophthalmology screening program for neonatal eye disease http://med.stanford.edu/ophthalmology/research/Digital_Health.html.

Santa Clara Valley Medical Center

A major tertiary care county hospital located between Palo Alto and San Jose, the Valley houses a full and robust department of ophthalmology. The Retina service is lead by Dr. Carolyn Pan and anchored by Dr. Ira Schachar, both of whom attend full time at the Valley. This very busy clinical service sees a large population of advanced diabetics with abundant surgical pathology as well as complex vitreoretinal diseases. The fellow is engaged in their own independent, weekly retina continuity clinic while on this rotation, allowing them to follow and manage complex patients as well as post operative care. With a dedicated retina OR day each week, the fellow is directly involved with primary management of all VR surgery at the Valley. All cases are attended by Drs. Pan or Schachar. Ample teaching opportunities abound as the Stanford Ophthalmology residents all rotate through the Valley retina clinics.

Palo Alto VA Medical Center

One of the flagship VA medical centers in the country, the ophthalmology department enjoys the leadership of Dr. Loh-Shan Leung as a full time vitreoretinal surgeon based at this site. This is a regional VA center which brings patients from a broad area for treatment and also increases the complexity of cases our fellows will experience. The fellow alternates between their weekly independent retina continuity clinic and a dedicated retina OR day with Dr. Leung. As a major teaching site for our residents, the fellow is actively engaged in guiding and mentoring our trainees in the management of retinal diseases
