Hearing Loss: A Paradigm Shift in Hearing Care

Stéphane F. Maison, PhD, CCC-A, Massachusetts Eye and Ear and Harvard Medical School

This presentation will review how Hidden Hearing Loss was discovered, some of the methods used to measure it in humans, emerging strategies that may reverse or mitigate it, and the implications of such discovery for clinical practice in audiology and otology.

Speaker

Stéphane F. Maison, PhD, CCC-A
Associate Professor of Otolaryngology — Head & Neck Surgery, Harvard Medical School
Director, Tinnitus Clinic, Mass Eye and Ear
Principal Investigator, Eaton-Peabody Laboratories, Mass Eye and Ear

Dr. Stéphane Maison is a nationally certified and state-licensed clinical audiologist, who holds a certificate in tinnitus management, with professional associations including the Association for Research in Otolaryngology, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, and the American Academy of Audiology.

Trained as a Neuroscientist in Lyon, France where he received a BS in Biology, a MS in Physiology and a PhD in Neurosciences, Dr. Maison has a professional background deeply rooted in research work. In 1999, he joined the Eaton-Peabody laboratory, working under the mentorship of Dr. Charlie Liberman. After two decades investigating hearing loss in the laboratory, he chose to pursue translational research to provide new diagnoses, better treatments and possibly cures to patients reporting tinnitus, reduced sound level tolerance and difficulties hearing in noisy environments.

Dr. Maison is a Principal Investigator in the Eaton-Peabody Laboratories at Mass Eye and Ear/Harvard Medical School as well as a clinical audiologist.

As an auditory physiologist, Dr. Maison studies the peripheral auditory system and has published more than 45 peer-reviewed papers in the field.

Having spent nearly 20 years honing his skills in the study of sensorineural hearing loss in animal models, Dr. Maison wants to bring the important research questions back to human subjects in a clinical context.

His research interests focus on 1) identifying hidden hearing loss (cochlear synaptopathy) in patients with "normal" audiograms, 2) identifying if tinnitus results from cochlear synaptopathy, and 3) therapies to restore speech intelligibility in adverse environments.

He received his PhD in neurosciences from the University Claude Bernard in Lyon, France. He then completed his postdoctoral fellowship in auditory physiology at Harvard Medical School.

He also received his Doctor of Audiology degree from Northeastern University.
