Development of inner ear gene therapy as a treatment for hearing loss and dizziness
Wade Chien, PhD, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine
Inner ear gene therapy is a rapidly growing field of research investigation. Currently, several clinical trials are ongoing to test the safety and efficacy of inner ear gene therapy for a specific form of hereditary hearing loss. In this talk, we will discuss the progress that has been made in the field of inner ear gene therapy. We will also address several challenges that still remain in order to translate inner ear gene therapy as an effective treatment for other types of hearing loss.
Speaker
Wade Chien, PhD
Professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery
Johns Hopkins School of Medicine
Dr. Wade Chien is a fellowship-trained neuro-otologist who sees adults and children with complicated hearing and ear problems, including hearing loss; severe ear infections; vestibular schwannoma (Acoustic neuroma); and neoplasms of the ear and temporal bone. Dr. Chien received a B.A. in biology and music from Brandeis University and an M.D. from the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine. He completed his otolaryngology residency training at the Harvard combined otolaryngology training program, and a neurotology fellowship at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. He is an alumnus of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute-National Institutes of Health Research Scholars Program, during which he worked with Dr. Gerald Fischbach to study the effects of neurotrophins in the neuromuscular junction. He is also a recipient of a T32 training grant in residency, during which he studied middle ear mechanics under the guidance of Dr. Saumil Merchant and Dr. John Rosowski.
Dr. Chien is a professor in the department of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and has an active clinical practice in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Chien is an alumnus of NIDCD's Otolaryngology Surgeon-Scientist Program.
