Sam Most, MD directed the Stanford Preservation & Structural Rhinoplasty Course 2025.

At the 2025 Stanford Preservation & Structural Rhinoplasty Course, the core message emphasized that preservation rhinoplasty is outstanding, structural methods remain powerful, and combining the two can be transformative, with true excellence lying in knowing when to use each approach and why. The program drew world-class faculty from Europe, Asia, South Africa, South America, and North America, with attendees traveling from Brazil, China, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Bangladesh, the UAE, and the United States. Over two days, the agenda featured didactics, recorded live surgeries, keynote lectures, and dynamic panels, including two cases reviewed in depth, followed by a final day of cadaver dissection. A sincere thanks to all who taught and contributed.

Stanford Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery held its 5th Annual Stanford Complex Endoscopic Endonasal Course.

The 2025 5th Annual Stanford Complex Endoscopic Endonasal Course brought together world-renowned experts to deliver advanced training in endoscopic skull base surgery. Drs. Peter Hwang, Zara Patel, Jayakar Nayak, Michael Chang, and Noel Ayoub partnered with Dr. Juan Fernandez-Miranda of Neurosurgery and other skull base colleagues from Stanford and the University of Pittsburgh to provide comprehensive instruction to an international cohort of participants. Through high-yield didactics, live surgery, and hands-on cadaveric dissection, attendees gained exposure to cutting-edge techniques in endoscopic endonasal skull base procedures.

Upcoming 3rd Annual Stanford/Langmore Foundation FEES Course.

Our Division of Laryngology is thrilled to announce the 3rd Annual Stanford/Langmore FEES Course with hands-on training for licensed adult and pediatric SLPs from January 23 -24, 2026.  Led by Dr. Ann Kearney, CScD, CCC-SLP, BCS-S, the two-day course will cover FEES fundamentals, applications, pediatric applications, and the otolaryngologist's role.  Faculty members of Langmore FEES, LLC represent clinicians, teachers, and researchers extensively trained by Dr. Susan Langmore, developer of the FEES procedure. These expert leaders in the field of swallowing evaluation and treatment are joined by providers in Stanford Medical’s Division of Laryngology including five fellowship-trained laryngologists and five voice and swallow specialized SLPs.

Upcoming Inaugural Stanford Sleep Apnea Course.

The Stanford Sleep Apnea Course, presented by our Sleep Surgery Division, makes its debut from May 14-16, 2026. This course will be directed by Robson Capasso, MD and Pedro Gomes de Oliveira, MD, FEBOMFS. Drawing on Stanford's pioneering legacy as a premier center for OSA surgical care, this course offers a fresh, comprehensive approach that spans wearable technologies, patient phenotyping, cutting-edge surgical techniques, and emerging therapies. Participants learn directly from Stanford's renowned sleep surgery faculty and alumni, complemented by guest speakers from Silicon Valley and around the world.

Stanford OHNS had an inspiring and unforgettable experience at AAO-HNSF & OTO EXPO 2025 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

From cutting-edge presentations and thought-provoking panels to reconnecting with mentors, alumni, and colleagues, this conference reminded us how far our field has come—and how far it still has to go.

Robson Capasso, MD and Kara Meister, MD were both Committee Chairs for the AAO-HNSF 2025 Annual Meeting.

Dr. Robson Capasso was appointed Chair of the AAO-HNSF Sleep Disorders Committee. This leadership reflects his longstanding involvement with national clinical guidelines and innovation in sleep surgery. Dr. Kara Meister was appointed Chair of the AAO-HNSF Pediatric Otolaryngology Education Committee. This committee is responsible for the educational mission of creating content related to pediatric otolaryngology for the Academy and its members.  The committee received a Committee of Excellence award in 2025.

Patrick Kiessling, MD, Laurie Lalakea, MD, and alumnus Duncan Meiklejohn, MD participated in a well-received panel presentation titled, “Incorporating Sustainability into QI Projects and Other Opportunities Outside of the OCC” at the SUO/AADO/OPDO 2025 Combined Meeting in Washington, DC.

Dr. Lalakea and Dr. Meiklejohn organized a panel on sustainability education within residency training at the annual combine meeting of the Society for University Otolaryngologists/ Association of Academic Departments of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery/Otolaryngology Program Directors Organization Combined Annual Meeting, in Washington, DC on November 7. Educating trainees about resource stewardship and healthcare sustainability is a current gap and compelling educational need given the significant environmental harms and waste associated with medical care delivery.  This expert panel highlighted the rationale and methodology for providing sustainability education through quality improvement curricula, journal clubs, grand rounds and clinical teaching.

Konstantina Stankovic, MD, PhD had the privilege of delivering the Tauno Palva Memorial Lecture at Helsinki University Hospital in Finland.

The Tauno Palva memorial lectureship was established to celebrate the remarkable legacy of Dr. Palva as a distinguished otologic surgeon, accomplished scientist, respected educator, and inspiring leader. Dr. Stankovic delivered a lecture on the mechanisms of vestibular schwannoma (VS)-induced hearing loss, showcasing how VS-secreted factor contribute to the impairment, while summarizing her lab’s pioneering, systematic approach to studying these factors.

Robson Capasso, MD remains deeply involved in the Stanford Mussalem Center for Biodesign as a Faculty Advisor, actively mentoring interdisciplinary teams in translational health innovation.

Kenyatta University is one of the three African universities the Stanford Mussalem Center for Biodesign has collaborated with for the East Africa Biodesign (EAB) program. The visit enabled strategic planning for the EAB program, covering the team’s progress, the Kenyatta University’s priorities, the contextual differences in applying biodesign in Kenya, and discussions of digital health innovation, commercialization, and sustainability.

The Brazilian delegation participated in lectures and discussions with Stanford Biodesign faculty on topics including US reimbursement, IP, commercialization, and business models; as well as a tour of the Stanford startup accelerator, StartX; a prototyping workshop. A highlight of the week was the joint session with our Innovation Fellows, facilitated by Dr. Capasso, during which they discussed the healthcare systems in Latin America.

Nikolas Blevins, MD was an invited faculty member at the Open Medical Institute’s Otology and Temporal Bone Surgery course held in Salzburg, Austria.

Dr. Nikolas Blevins was one of seven renowned surgeons invited to share their expertise with 34 participants from 25 countries at the Otology and Temporal Bone Surgery course. The program included a full day in the hands-on dissection lab, where participants practiced and refined otologic techniques such as mastoidectomy, stapedectomy, and the facial recess approach, complemented by engaging lectures.

Zara Patel, MD was the invited Keynote Rhinology speaker of this year’s Panamerican Congress of Otorhinolaryngology, which was held in Santiago, Chile.

Dr. Zara Patel opened the congress speaking about her work in Artificial Intelligence in Rhinology, and gave two more talks throughout the week on Treating Olfactory Loss and Precision Frontal Sinus Surgery.
