Stanford Laryngology held its 2nd Annual Stanford/Langmore Foundation FEES Course.

We had a great turnout at our 2nd Annual Stanford/Langmore Foundation FEES Course! A big thank you to Dr. Ann Kearney, who led the course, our group of supporting Division of Laryngology faculty, and visiting faculty for producing such a great course! Participants had hands-on experience and one-on-one training in the performance of FEES.

Stanford Pediatric Otolaryngology held its 2025 Pediatric Otolaryngology Updates.

The Pediatric Otolaryngology Updates provided invaluable insights into the latest clinical advancements in pediatric otolaryngology. Expert faculty members covered critical topics such as hearing loss treatment, airway disorders, sleep apnea, foreign bodies in the ears, nose, and throat, and much more. This event was a great success, and we are grateful to all involved. Special thanks to Drs. Alan G. Cheng, Kara Davis Meister, and Douglas Sidell for their exceptional leadership in organizing this impactful event.

Upcoming 8th Annual Head & Neck Cancer Patient and Caregiver Symposium.

We are excited to extend an invitation to you for the 8th Annual Head & Neck Cancer Patient and Caregiver Symposium, taking place on Saturday, April 26.

This day-long event is dedicated to supporting patients with head and neck cancer and their caregivers. The symposium aims to empower attendees with valuable insights and resources to help them live their best lives after a diagnosis.

Former Audiology fellow Michael Smith, MD, and his mentor Matthew Fitzgerald, PhD received the Ear and Hearing 2024 Honorable Mention Reader's Choice Award from the American Auditory Society.

Drs. Smith and Fitzgerald received the Ear and Hearing 2024 Honorable Mention Reader's Choice Award from the American Auditory Society for their manuscript entitled “A Large-Scale Study of the Relationship Between Degree and Type of Hearing Loss and Recognition of Speech in Quiet and Noise.” Their research examined how different types and severities of hearing loss affect speech recognition in both quiet and noisy environments. They found that individuals with conductive hearing loss (CHL) performed similarly to those with normal hearing when speech was presented at audible levels. However, patients with mixed (MHL) or sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) exhibited decreased speech perception abilities as the severity of their hearing loss increased. Notably, the study revealed that standard word recognition tests in quiet settings often failed to detect difficulties that patients experienced in noisy environments.

Emily Antes and Celia Tow were selected to present their research at the Student Research Forum at the American Academy of Audiology’s annual conference, AAA 2025+HearTECH Expo.

At the AAA 2025+HearTECH Expo, the Student Research Forum spotlighted cutting-edge work by graduate students in audiology.Out of the four students selected nationwide to present their original research, Antes and Tow, both mentored by Dr. Matthew Fitzgerald, represented Stanford OHNS. These presentations offered valuable insights into emerging trends and methodologies that are shaping the field of audiology.

Research Collaborative led by Edward Damrose, MD, FACS and Ann Kearney, CScD, CCC-SLP, BCS-S commended for Facilitating Stanford Health Care's Redesignation as a Magnet Center of Excellence by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

Their interprofessional quality improvement project aimed at implementing Heat and Moisture Exchangers (HMEs) for tracheostomy patients. It demonstrated that using HMEs significantly reduced costs (from over $400 to around $125 per patient) and improved patient outcomes by enhancing comfort, mobility, and reducing complications associated with traditional humidification systems. The initiative was well-received and adopted as standard practice post-pilot.
