Stanford OHNS held a symposium celebrating the clinical retirement of Robert K. Jackler, MD.

With friends and admirers flocking from around the world, we celebrated the remarkable career of Dr. Robert Jackler in March.

Dr. Jackler has had an extraordinary impact on our department, the Stanford University, and OHNS at large.  A visionary leader, outstanding surgeon, erudite scholar, innovative educator, and compassionate human being, he has inspired everyone around him to bravely explore the far reaches of what is possible.

His lifelong scholarly work is like the triple redwood frond in the flag of all Stanford schools symbolizing the generation, organization, and transmission of knowledge. His medical illustrations are phenomenal examples of augmented reality – they highlight the essentials while gently shunning the minutia to the background. He preceded Meta and Apple in doing such things. As a leading authority on tobacco advertising, Rob has tirelessly testified on the subject in the US Congress. He has been a fearless warrior on the war against smoking and nicotine addiction, and his work continues to shape public policy.

As an individual, Dr. Jackler epitomizes the redwood tree found in the Stanford logo. The mighty redwoods are the tallest natural creations on Earth. Similarly, Rob is a giant whose immense oeuvre has influenced generations of trainees, colleagues, and patients globally.

Redwoods grow in clusters; established trees in their family circles help stabilize and nourish the up-and-coming ones. Dr. Jackler is one of those magnificent, elegant pillars, supporting and nurturing everyone who has had the privilege of being around him.

Stanford Laryngology held its Inaugural Stanford/Langmore Foundation FEES Course

We had a great turnout at our inaugural Stanford/Langmore Foundation FEES Course! A big thank you to Dr. Ann Kearney, who led the course, our group of supporting Division of Laryngology faculty, and visiting faculty for producing such a great course! Participants had hands-on experience and one-on-one training in the performance of FEES.

Stanford Head and Neck Cancer Center held its 7th Annual Head and Neck Cancer Patient and Caregiver Education Symposium

An attendee who has attended past symposiums stated,

"I always learn something new.  It was very patient-oriented, educating the patient, and covering subjects usually not talked about in the Doctor's office. The whole day was worth it, and we look forward to next year's Symposium too."

Over 100 in-person and virtual attendees interacted with members of the Stanford Medicine community to learn more about issues common in head and neck cancer survivorship.  A big thank you to Clinical professor Heather Starmer, who led the symposium.

Lectures and panels included:

Glial Dysregulation and Cognitive Impairment following Cancer Therapies
Michelle Monje, MD

Cognitive Changes and Cancer Treatment: Chemo Brain and Beyond
Julie Hicks, SLP

Global Engagement

Our department continues Global Health program with educational endeavors in Asia!

In January, our team traveled back to Phnom Penh, Cambodia where they offered free microtia and cleft surgery at the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital! This great collaboration amongst Smile Cambodia, North West Medical Volunteers, and the Standish Foundation USA was shared in an article and video.

Our gender-diverse patients deserve the latest and greatest in innovation.

Our gender-diverse patients deserve the latest and greatest in innovation. Here at Stanford OHNS, we are one of the few academic medical institutions in the world that offers a "scarless tracheal shave" (aka transoral chondrolaryngoplasty) for our transfeminine/nonbinary patients - a way to reduce the Adam's Apple without any scars on the neck.
