Post-Concussive Dizziness
Stanford Dizziness Clinic
Background
Post-Concussive Dizziness occurs following a mild traumatic brain injury (concussion). It may present as vertigo, lightheadedness, imbalance, or motion sensitivity. Symptoms can persist for weeks to months after the initial injury, but the majority of people improve with time and exercise.
Causes
Post-Concussive Dizziness results from a combination of vestibular dysfunction in the brain and inner ears, neck muscle tension, and changes in brain processing.
Treatment
Treatment includes vestibular rehabilitation therapy, balance exercises, and gradual return to physical activity. Stress management and cognitive therapy may also help in cases of prolonged symptoms.
