Labyrinthitis
Stanford Dizziness Clinic
Background
Labyrinthitis is an inner ear infection that causes sudden dizziness, vertigo, hearing loss, and ringing in ONE ear (tinnitus). It typically follows a viral illness, such as a cold or flu, and results in inflammation of the inner ear structures that control balance and hearing.
Causes
Labyrinthitis is most often caused by viral infections but can also result from bacterial infections, autoimmune disorders, or inner ear trauma. It can also be caused by a micro-stroke in the ear or brainstem.
Treatment
Most cases of labyrinthitis resolve on their own over several weeks. Symptomatic treatment may include anti-nausea medications, vestibular suppressants, and steroids in some cases. Vestibular rehabilitation therapy may be recommended for persistent balance issues.
