Residents and Fellows

The Office of Diversity in Medical Education is committed to supporting the recruitment, inclusion, and retention of diverse GME trainees as future leaders in medicine.

Message from Assistant Dean for Diversity in Graduate Medical Education

Welcome! As a child of Eritrean immigrants, born and raised in Texas, and first physician in my family, I came to Stanford in 2010 to complete my pediatrics training because I was drawn to the people (supportive community of educators and colleagues, strong mentorship), patients (diverse patient populations and training experiences across sites), and programs (endless opportunities for leadership and scholarship development, advocacy, and health equity). Now, 10+ years later, I have stayed for those same reasons and more and am honored to serve in this role to support the professional development of our diverse residents and fellows as future faculty and leaders in medicine. Below highlights some areas of focus:

Recruitment

  • Attendance at minority medical association conferences
  • Collaborate with the Office of Medical Student Affairs on funded visiting clerkships for students underrepresented in medicine: SCORE Program
  • Host GME-wide diversity recruitment receptions for GME applicants
  • Create recommendations for GME programs on providing holistic review of applicants and best practices in inclusive recruitment practices
Inclusion
  • Provide support to the GME Diversity Committee with programming that fosters inclusion, personal and professional development
  • Support 4 awards for GME Trainees: Dr. Miquell Miller Award for Promoting Diversity & Inclusion, Dr. Audrey Shafter Award for Promoting Diversity & Inclusion, GME Awards for Promoting Health Equity
  • Serve as an advocate for diverse GME trainees

Leadership Development

Retention & Mentorship

  • Collaborate with the Office of Faculty Development and Diversity to hold events that foster retention of GME trainees into fellowship and/or academic careers through mentorship and professional development
  • Connect with opportunities to mentor diverse pre-health and medical students in our pipeline programs

Education

  • Collaborate with Stanford GME to offer educational activities focused on fostering inclusive learning environments, cultural humility, health equity, and anti-racism within medicine
