Fotonovela Project

Project Summary:

Funded from Sept. 1, 2008 through August 31, 2011.  This grant was awarded by the national office of the Alzheimer’s Association. The primary aim is to develop a culturally appropriate educational tool widely used among Latinos called a fotonovela that focuses on teaching Latino family caregivers how to more effectively manage difficult everyday behaviors exhibited by their demented relative. Once developed, it will be evaluated for effectiveness in improving quality of life, and reducing caregiver distress, compared to a control condition of educational material that does not focus on skill-building.

Collaborators are Ramon Valle, PhD., San Diego State Univ. and Ladson Hinton, M.D., PhD., UC Davis.  Prior successful experience teaching psychoeducational skills to Latino caregivers provides the theoretical backdrop for this work.
