Rui Huang MD, PhD
I am an Associate Chief Physician in the Department of Infectious Diseases at Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, the Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University Medical School in China. I am also the Associate Professor of Internal Medicine in Nanjing University and Nanjing Medical University. My research interests focus on chronic liver diseases and emerging infectious diseases. In my free time, I enjoy reading and traveling.
Roymara Louissaint
"Roymara is a current Stanford undergraduate student studying Biological Engineering on the pre-med track. She is interested in the applications of biomaterials for regenerative medicine. In her free time she enjoys learning languages, reading dystopian novels, and crocheting!"
Sovann Linden
Sovann is a Master's student in Management Science and Engineering at Stanford. He holds a Masters in Mathematics from the University of Oxford, where he also completed his bachelors. Sovann worked in the financial industry in London, as a hedge fund quantitative analyst. He is involved in Dr Nguyen's lab as graduate research assistant working on new data initiatives. He is grateful for the opportunity to make a small contribution to medical research and learn from his colleagues. In his spare time, Sovann enjoys tennis, swimming and hiking.
Scott Barnett
Scott Barnett, PhD
I was born in Washington DC and have been living in and around DC for most of my life. I have a PhD and Master’s degree in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from the University of South Florida. I currently serve in the lab as a biostatistician. In my spare time, I enjoy scuba diving in the Carribean and hiking anywhere I can find and spending time with family and friends.
Tao Tao Yan
Taotao Yan, MD, PhD
I am from the Northwest of China. I received my doctoral degree in Medicine from Xi’an Jiaotong University in 2015. I am a physician in the Department of Infectious Diseases at the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University. I join Dr. Nguyen’s Lab at Stanford as a Visiting Scholar in 2024. My work focuses on liver failure, hepatitis and sex differences in MASLD. I enjoy cooking, listening to music and watching movies in my free time.
Xinrong Zhang
Xinrong Zhang, PhD
Xinrong Zhang grew up and attended medical school in Guangzhou, China. She completed her Ph.D. of Medical Sciences from Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong in 2023. She will start the postdoctoral research fellowship in Dr. Nguyen’s lab from the spring of 2023. Her research interests mainly focus on epidemiology and clinical research on non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases (NAFLD), hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and cirrhosis. She has some experience with large database research and clinical trial studies. In her free time, Xinrong enjoys listening to music, watching movies, singing, doing sports and traveling.

Angela is currently an undergraduate at Stanford majoring in Human Biology, with plans to attend medical school after graduating. She is from Northern California, and in her free time, she enjoys painting landscapes, listening and singing to Broadway musicals, and going on walks during sunset.

Nicholas is a UCSD alum and graduate of Kaohsiung Medical University. He grew up in the Bay Area and is involved with clinical and epidemiological liver research at the Nguyen Lab. He spends his time gardening, painting, chasing his dogs, and small woodworking projects.

Allen is an undergraduate at Santa Clara University majoring in Biology, with plans to work as an EMT during college. He is involved with projects on HBV, HCV, and NAFLD with the Nguyen Lab. He is from Northern California, and in his free time enjoys watching sports and swimming at the beach.

Linda Henry
I received my BSN from the University of Iowa (Iowa City, IA), my MS from Georgetown University (Washington DC), and my PhD from George Mason University (Fairfax, VA). I have worked with Dr. Nguyen and her staff for over three years and have loved every minute not only from the aspect of learning so much about viral hepatitis B but also having the opportunity to work with so many wonderful people. In my off time, I like to swim, bike, (road, mountain and gravel), run, hike, and read both non fiction and fiction.
Tiffany Hsaio
Tiffany Hsaio, MD
Tiffany is a study coordinator in the Nguyen Lab. She graduated with a double major in Biology and Psychology from UCSD in 2010, and a master's in Biology from UCSD in 2012. She initially joined the Nguyen lab in 2013. She graduated from medical school at VCU in 2018 and completed two years of surgery residency, and then rejoined the Nguyen Lab in late 2023. In her spare time she enjoys watching baseball and playing with her 3 cats.
Jocelyn Woog
Since 2010, I have served as the Executive Director of the Asian Health Foundation (AHF), a non-profit organization which is dedicated to improving the health of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. In this role, I am responsible for grant-writing, administration, strategic planning, and project management for AHF’s continuing medical education programs in the areas of viral hepatitis and liver disease.
In my free time, I am learning to play the harp and love the daily challenge of the New York Times Wordle and Connections games.
Joseph Hoang
Joe Hoang, BS
Joe is born and raised in San Jose with 10+ year experience in Enterprise Software Solution and Enterprise Architecture. My role is to manage large-scale data sets and run statistical analysis. Strong information technology background with a Bachelor of Science (BS) focused in Electrical Engineering from San Jose State University. Previous researches include focuses around hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and hepatocellular carcinoma. During my free time, I enjoy tennis and swimming
Holden Hsu
ao-Chun (Holden) Hsu, MD, MSc, PhD
Holden currently serves as the Director of the Center for Liver Diseases at the E-Da Hospital and Associate Professor at the I-Shou University, both of which are located in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, where he was born. As a practicing physician interested in clinical sciences, Holden maintains a broad interest in unresolved issues in patient care but commits his research focus to the management of chronic viral hepatitis. He enjoys listening to audiobooks while jogging.
Daniel Huang
Daniel Q. Huang, MBBS, MRCP
Daniel is a transplant hepatologist working at the National University Hospital, Singapore. He works closely with the Nguyen lab on liver cancer, viral hepatitis and NAFLD. Daniel is also involved in translational research with the National University of Singapore and the Genome Institute of Singapore. He is interested in liver cancer oncogenesis in NAFLD and hepatitis B. Daniel used to play video games and soccer in his free time, but now spends most of his non-working hours entertaining his two energetic children
Takanori Ito
Takanori Ito, MD, PhD
Takanori is Assistant Professor in the Department of GI/Hepatology of Nagoya University Hospital in Japan. He works closely with the Nguyen Lab on NAFLD and liver cancer. Currently, he is investigating various research areas in hepatology including clinical research in NAFLD, HCC, viral hepatitis, and primary biliary cholangitis as well as basic research in liver regeneration using stem cells. Takanori used to play guitar, bass, and snowboarding in his free time, but recently enjoys traveling and watching movies with his family on holiday.

Eunice is an undergraduate student at Duke University, majoring in statistics with a data science concentration. She grew up in South Korea and is involved with clinical research and data analysis at the Nguyen Lab, with recent focuses on socioeconomic health disparities in chronic liver disease trends. She is a music producer and loves exploring coffee shops, reading artworks, and all things March Madness
Fanpu Ji
Fanpu Ji, MD, PhD
Fanpu is currently Associate Professor in the Department of Infectious Diseases at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree from Xi’an Jiaotong University in China in 2002. He also obtained his Master in Medicine in 2006 and PhD in 2015 at Xi'an Jiaotong University. He then served as a visiting scholar in Dr. Mindie’s hepatology research program at Stanford in 2016-2017 and has continued to work with Dr. Mindie’s team in HCV and HCC projects since his return to Xi’an, China. In his free time, He enjoys swimming and playing pick-up basketball.

Ashley graduated from UCSF with a Master of Science in Biomedical Imaging. She currently works as a Clinical Research Coordinator for the Nguyen Lab. She is interested in research involving cirrhosis and gender disparities. Ashley was born and raised in Southern California. In her free time, she enjoys going on hikes with friends, watching movies, and cooking.
Mingjuan Jin
Mingjuan Jin, PhD
Mingjuan Jin is Associate Professor of Epidemiology from Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China. She was visiting scholar to the Nguyen Lab in 2014-2015. She is involved in liver cancer risk prediction work for high-risk patients (chronic hepatitis etc.) with the Nguyen Lab and focuses on theepidemiology, etiology, risk estimation and screening for colorectal cancer at Zhejiang University. In her free time, she enjoys yoga, reading, and gardening.

Mattia is a grad student at Stanford with a background in engineering, theoretical physics and data science. He is involved in AI/data projects, especially NLP and computer vision. He is from Italy and grew up in South Korea and France, passionate about cooking, aeronautics and understanding the world

After graduating from UC Santa Cruz, Michael earned his MS in Epidemiology at Stanford and has been working with Dr. Nguyen since then, with plans to attend medical school in the future. His research interests are in the public health impacts of chronic liver diseases, particularly nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. He is from Northern California and in his free time, enjoys exercising and playing guitar.

Nick is an undergraduate student at Stanford University, majoring in Human Biology with plans to attend medical school. His interests lie at the intersection of pathophysiology and epidemiology in public health. Born and raised in California, he enjoys exploring Bay Area hiking trails with his dog, playing tennis, reading mystery novels, and watching Warriors basketball with friends.

I was a Visiting Scholar in the team of Dr. Nguyen from March 2018 to March 2019. I am from RuZhou city, HeNan, China. I like traveling, reading and walking. Dong Hyun Lee
Dong Hyun Lee, MD
Dr. Dong Hyun Lee is currently a chief director of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Good Gang-An Hospital, Busan, South Korea. He graduated from Pusan National University School of Medicine and received a Ph.D. from Internal Medicine, Pusan National University School of Medicine in 2007. He cherishes lots of fun memories during his stay at Stanford as a visiting scholar at Dr. Nguyen’s Research Lab, 2017~2018. He is still actively collaborating with Dr. Nguyen’s Team. He enjoys cleaning the house and watching fun movies with his family.

I am currently Assistant Professor in the Department of General Internal Medicine at Kyushu University Hospital in Fukuoka, Japan, practicing general internal medicine with a focus in infectious disease and liver disease and conducting clinical epidemiology and outcome studies in hepatology. I obtained my medical degree in 2002 from Kobe University and my PhD in 2010 from Kyushu University, Japan. I joined the Nguyen Lab as a visiting scholar in 2017, and learned a lotwhile there. I also had a great, productive time with many of my colleagues in the lab. In my free time, I enjoy playing video games with my children, and watching Netflix, YouTube, and sports channels.

I am a hepatologist at Yangon Specialty Hospital, Myanmar. I graduated from the University of Medicine, Mandalay and worked as a resident physician in internal medicine at Mandalay General Hospital. In 2015, I came to Yangon for my postgraduate course in hepatology. I am happy and proud to work with the Nguyen Lab. I enjoy making handicraft at home and taking walk on my free time.

She specializes in clinical and basic research on chronic liver disease. Her main research direction is fatty liver and viral hepatitis. She was a visiting scholar in Professor Mindie Nguyen’s laboratory at Stanford University from 2019.3-2019.8.In her spare time, she likes to travel and take pictures.

I was born and raised in Malaysia. I attended medical school in Taiwan, graduate school at Oxford University and then did a postdoctoral research fellowship in Dr. Nguyen’s lab, a place I used to call home, before starting residency at Cedars Sinai Medical Center. My research interests focus on epidemiology and health outcome research on viral hepatitis, NAFLD, cirrhosis and HCC. As a new father I enjoy inventing new ways to get my baby to sleep.

Dr. Changqing (Cathy) Zhao is a hepatologist and Chief Physician in the Department of Cirrhosis at Shuguang Hospital in Shanghai, China. She served as visiting scholar at the Nguyen Lab at Stanford in 2014-2015. Since then, she has continued to work with Dr Nguyen and her team. Her research focuses on the management and clinical outcomes of patients with cirrhosis. She was born and raised in Shanghai. She enjoys traveling all around the world, watching movies and reading.

Qi is a Chinese physician from the First Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University in South China. Her clinical practice focuses on liver diseases such as chronic hepatitis B, autoimmune hepatitis, and the management of patients with cirrhosis and end-stage liver disease. In her free time, she enjoys traveling and cooking. In 2018-2019, she served as visiting scholar inthe Nguyen Lab at Stanford University Medical Center investigating the interaction betweenchronic hepatitis Band fatty liver. She also performs laboratoryresearchinvestigating immune mechanism of functional cure of chronic hepatitis B atFujian Medical University.
Xianhu (Eric) Mao
Xianhu(Eric) Mao, PhD
Xianhua Mao is currently a visiting Ph.D. student from the Department of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong in November 2023. His research interests focus on clinical epidemiology of pharmacological therapy, metabolic disease, and gastrointestinal cancer. He also has experience with statistical methods, molecular epidemiology, cohort study, and deep learning in chronic liver disease, as well as meta-analysis. In his free time, he enjoys electronic games.

Originally from San Jose, CA, Andy is currently a fourth year medical student at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC). He joined the Nguyen Lab in 2024 due to his interest in hepatology/gastroenterology. Committed to working with the underserved, he will be coming back home to the San Francisco Bay Area as an incoming categorical internal medicine resident at Alameda Health Systems - Highland Hospital. In his spare time, he enjoys watching the Golden State Warriors and the Memphis Grizzlies, and also exercising at the gym.

After graduating from Zhejiang University in China in 2013, I joined the faculty of the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, and is now an Associate Professor and Associate Chief Physician in the Department of Infectious Diseases. I came as a Visiting Scholar at the Nguyen Lab in 2024. My research interests are pathophysiology and epidemiology of viral hepatitis, MASLD, cirrhosis, and liver failure. In free time, I enjoy reading, travel and playing ping pong.

Rongtao Lai is an Attending Physician and Associate Professor at Shanghai Ruijin Hospital in China. She completed her Ph.D. in medicine at Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine in 2015. She specializes in clinical and basic research on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and drug-induced liver injury (DILI). Her responsibilities include diagnosing and treating patients with various liver diseases such as liver injury, liver failure, liver cancer, etc. Rongtao enjoys swimming, cooking Chinese food, and spending time with her family in her spare time.

Currently, she serves as an Attending Physician at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, where she focuses on the pathophysiology of drug-induced liver injury (DILI) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). In her free time, you might find her cycling or discovering new places to visit.

Ethan is a third-year resident in the Stanford Internal Medicine Residency Program. He is originally from Denver, Colorado and loves skiing, getting outdoors, and *attempting* to solve the New York Times crossword puzzle.

Iyanu Ojuko is a sophomore at Stanford University, originally from London, studying Bioengineering. She is passionate about exploring how bioengineering can drive advancements in medical technology, with a particular interest in biomolecular research. Zhiwen is an associate researcher in the Department of Pathology at Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital. Zhiwen has presided over several national projects, and his research focuses on exploring the mechanisms of liver diseases mediated by inflammatory responses and metabolic disorders, including fatty liver, liver fibrosis/cirrhosis, and liver regeneration. In his free time, Zhiwen enjoys listening to music, watching movies, hiking, and walking his dog.

Haruki Uojima, is currently an Associate Professor at Kitasato University Hospital in Japan, with extensive experience in hepatology. The primary goal of his visit to the Nguyen Lab at Stanford University is to collaborate with world-leading experts in liver disease. He aims to deepen his knowledge of cutting-edge diagnostic and therapeutic advancements, particularly those related to cirrhosis and fibrosis. During his stay, he looks forward to contributing to ongoing research projects and initiating new studies.
