Today 90 students will launch the journey that transforms them into physicians, while an additional 27 embark on the path to becoming physician assistants. At an afternoon ceremony on the School of Medicine's expansive lawn, the matriculating MD students will receive stethoscopes, wear their new white coats, meet their classmates and enjoy a warm welcome from Dean Lloyd Minor, MD. Incoming students in the Master of Science (M.S.) in Physician Assistant Studies will also receive their white coats and stethoscopes during the first half of the afternoon event, inside the school's Li Ka Shing Center for Learning and Knowledge.
It's a fun event and one that gives us a chance to meet some of these extraordinary individuals. Among the medical students are 47 men and 43 women, nine of whom are NCAA athletes. Twelve carry honors and awards, such as Fulbright fellows, Goldwater scholars, Marshall scholars, Rhodes scholars, and Amgen Scholars. Five are Knight-Hennessy scholars. The MSPA incoming class, meanwhile, includes two men and 25 women, three of whom are NCAA athletes and one an Olympian. Honors and awards include National Merit Scholarship, Gates Millennium Scholar, and the Daniels Fund-Boundless Opportunity Scholarship, just to name a few.
