Stanford Medicine earns top rankings for patient care from Vizient

By Mark Conley

The organization that promotes and measures improvement in health care performance has ranked Stanford Medicine among the top academic medical centers in the United States.

Stanford Medicine has again been recognized among the top institutions for patient care by Vizient, a national health care performance improvement organization.

For the third time in its history, Stanford Health Care was a five-star performer in the Vizient Quality and Accountability Study for comprehensive academic medical centers, ranking fifth out of 118 peer institutions for inpatient care.

This year, the study — conducted annually since 2005 — included 1,220 hospitals segmented into seven cohorts based on hospital size, services, and operational characteristics. It measured performance on the quality of patient care in six domains: safety, mortality, effectiveness, efficiency, patient centeredness and variation in care.

Stanford Health Care also performed strongly in outpatient, also known as ambulatory, care, ranking sixth out of 66 in its cohort. The ambulatory care ranking is based on five key domains: access to care, efficiency, quality, continuum of care and equity.

In addition, the organization received top performer honors in Vizient’s Environmental Sustainability Excellence category for the first time — an award recognizing responsible purchasing decisions and a commitment to carbon emission reduction and climate resilience.

Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley was also recognized as a five-star in-patient performer among complex care medical centers for the second straight year, ranking 17th in a cohort of 208 complex care medical centers.

“Every time our patients come through these doors, they put a tremendous amount of faith in us — and at Stanford Medicine, it is our mission to validate that trust through the highest standards of clinical excellence,” said David Entwistle, president and CEO of Stanford Health Care. “We’re proud to again be recognized among the nation’s top health systems, and we look forward to working with Vizient and our peers to advance care that is better, safer and more effective for the people we serve.”

Vizient is a national health care performance improvement organization that provides data-driven solutions, helps health care organizations benchmark performance, and facilitates collaborative opportunities to enhance patient outcomes and reduce costs.

“At Stanford Medicine, we take pride in the world-class services we provide, and Vizient's recognition reflects the extraordinary dedication and expertise of our faculty and staff,”  said Lloyd Minor, MD, dean of the Stanford School of Medicine and vice president for medical affairs at Stanford University. “Together, our teams are committed to continuous improvement, always striving to raise the bar on high-quality care for our patients.”
