Konstantina Stankovic and David Studdert join the distinguished society of scientists.

They are among 100 new members elected to this to year the academy, which provides policymakers, professionals, business leaders and the public with independent, scientifically informed analysis and recommendations on issues related to health and the biomedical sciences.
Konstantina Stankovic, MD, PhD, Bertarelli Foundation Professor and chair of the department of otolaryngology – head and neck surgery at Stanford Medicine, was elected for her contributions to understanding causes of and treatments for hearing loss, which affects 1.5 billion people worldwide. Stankovic has led national and international collaborations to develop and deploy novel molecular diagnostics and therapeutics for hearing loss and has educated tomorrow’s leaders in surgery and science.
David Studdert, ScD, a professor of health policy and of law, was elected for his major contributions to our understanding of the causes of medical injury, tort litigation and firearm violence. Studdert’s research has highlighted the relationship between gun ownership and increased mortality risk. He has also led landmark studies of medical injury and malpractice litigation which have had a profound impact on tort reform. Studdert is also Stanford University’s vice provost and dean of research
The National Academy of Medicine has more than 2,400 members who in turn elect new members through a process that recognizes individuals who have made major contributions to the advancement of the medical sciences, health care and public health. An academy committee selects new members each year from a list of nominees.
