Welcome to our new interns!

June 27, 2023

A warm welcome to our PGY-1 residents, Maria, Joy, Dhiraj, and Owen, who started their neurosurgical training in June 2023! Read more about our new interns below.

María José Cavagnaro earned her medical degree at 23 years old from The University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. During her medical school career, Dr. Cavagnaro distinguished herself by achieving excellence in academics. After completing medical school in Argentina, Dr. Cavagnaro completed six years of neurosurgery residency at the Hospital Fernandez, Buenos Aires.

Dr. Cavagnaro also completed a research fellowship in Skull base Anatomy at Weill Cornell University, with part of her own dissections published in a peer-review journal. She joined the University of Arizona - Department of Neurological Surgery as a research fellow in February of 2021, where she participated on more than 50 publications, presentations, and abstracts. In July 2022, Dr. Cavagnaro started her Spine Clinical Fellowship at the University at Buffalo, where she fueled her interest of becoming a complex spine surgeon.

Dr. Cavagnaro like the rest of her family has a passion for soccer. Her uncle is a professional soccer coach, and she likes to play with friends and watch the games of her team, Velez Sarsfield, as well as the Argentina national team. She also loves biking for exercising, commuting, or explore places.

What do you enjoy most about neurosurgery as a career?

I can spend hours thinking of all the reasons why I love this, and every day I get to discover a new reason and new details that I had not revealed before. In my eyes, nothing compares to accompanying my patients during the process of care and having the opportunity to see them leave our care with a new perspective and prospect in life.

Patients waking up from coma, recovering from head trauma, walking again without pain, improving their posture, patients recovering their vision, or not having seizures anymore, or even those patients we may not be able to cure but bring some level of comfort. Each of them left a mark in my life and continue to.

I am passionate about neurosurgery, but more importantly about the people around me that inspire me to be better person and professional.

What do you enjoy most about training at Stanford?

As a foreigner, working at Stanford is the American Dream come true. At Stanford there is no ceiling for growing in academics or as a surgeon. This program excels in all areas, in a very familiar environment. I am excited for the years to come.

What is something that others may not know about you?

I have two cats, named Blue and White, as the colors of my soccer Team Velez Sarsfield. Velez Sarsfield is a professional team in Argentina, on the first division, where my Uncle Carlos Cavagnaro used to be coach.
