Stanford Neurology Residency Mentorship Program
We recognize the value of mentorship to achieve our mission to train tomorrow’s academic leaders. We have comprehensive and over-arching mentorship programs for our Neurology Neurology residents that operate on a number of levels.
Professional/Career Development Mentor
Every resident must select a primary professional mentor by November 1 of their PGY-2 year. Some residents have more than one. This mentor provides guidance to help residents think about subspecialty choice, career options, job searching, CV preparation, and other professional goals. Residents are expected to meet with mentors at a minimum of twice per year, though ideally every 3-4 months. The mentor and resident will complete the mentor discussion form annually by April 1 and choose to renew or adjust the mentorship relationship for the following year. This mentor guides and oversee resident research project in a particular area of concentration (basic, clinical, or translational neuroscience, med ed, QI, other). As with any research mentorship relationship, we expect the resident and their academic/scholarhship mentor to meet regularly during the various phases of research. This is an essential relationship, particularly for those residents who are planning on a career as a physician-scientist.
Communication Coaching Program
Stanford Neurology has developed a unique coaching program for residents, focussed on communication in clinical settings (both inpatient and outpatient). Residents will be assigned a coach who will set up 1:1 observational sessions during clinical actitivies, followed by real-time feedback. Coaches will observe patients on rounds, in clinic, during virtual video visits, family meetings, providing difficult news, etc. Coaches will remain with residents throughout all three years and provide ongoing goal-setting and assessments.
