Community Statement

NeuROOTS: Representation, Outreach, Opportunity, Trust, Support

NeuROOTS is the community and belonging initiative for the Stanford Neurosciences PhD Program. Our mission is to ensure that every student has clear access to opportunity, practical support, and a training environment where they can thrive. We strengthen representation, expand outreach, create pathways to opportunity, build trust, and provide consistent support across the program.

Scientific excellence depends on broad participation and a culture that enables all trainees to contribute fully. Our responsibility extends beyond research and coursework to building a professional community that actively supports student success.

NeuROOTS develops and implements efforts that improve recruitment and retention, provide educational and professional programming, strengthen career development, foster community connection, and link students with resources through workshops and hardship support. Activities include seminars, symposia, coffee hours, community dinners, and other events that promote mentorship, visibility, and peer support.

Our work is intentional and data-informed. We gather student feedback, identify barriers, and partner with program leadership and peer committees to implement practical, durable solutions. We are guided by a simple principle: success should not depend on navigating the system alone. The program must be structured so that every student has what they need to succeed.

Membership is determined by committee vote, with the goal of reflecting the breadth of experiences and perspectives within our community. Additional campus resources for health, wellness, and professional support are available through the program and University.
