Faculty Participation

Stanford MSTP proudly congratulates Karl Deisseroth, MD, PhD, MSTP alumnus and Stanford faculty member, on receiving the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Dr. Deisseroth earned his Stanford PhD in 1998 and MD in 2000. He was recognized for pioneering contributions to optogenetics, a transformative approach that uses light to control nerve-cell activity with extraordinary precision.

By demonstrating that neurons could be engineered to respond to light, Dr. Deisseroth helped create a powerful tool for investigating brain function in living animals. Today, optogenetics has had a profound impact across neuroscience and biomedical research.

Stanford chemist Carolyn Bertozzi, PhD, was awarded the Nobel Prize for her pioneering work establishing the field of bioorthogonal chemistry, which allows researchers to study biomolecules and their interactions in living organisms without disrupting natural biological functions. Bertozzi has courtesy appointments in Radiology and Chemical and Systems Biology.
