Maternal Moving - Pup Retrieval

Mouse Ethogram  >  Active Behaviors  >  General Activity  >  Maternal Behaviors  >  Maternal Moving  >  Pup Retrieval

Overview and Meaning

Individual newborn pups rarely stray on their own from a warm nest. If a pup is separated from the litter the dam will later locate, retrieve, and move the lost pup(s) back to the nest, in response to their ultrasonic cries.

Description

The dam will pick up a mouse pup using her mouth and move it from outside to inside the nest.
