Mouse Ethogram  >  Active Behaviors  >  General Activity

General activity behaviors are classified according their purpose:

Exploratory Behaviors

Sensing information from surroundings

Sexual Behaviors

Seeking and engaging in copulation

Affiliative Interactions

Forming and maintaining social bonds

Maternal Behaviors

Tending to health and safety of pups

Agonistic Interactions

Competing for dominance or territory

Miscellaneous Behaviors

Occurring under multiple contexts

Overview and Meaning

Active behaviors involve the presence of movement. More broadly speaking, mouse behavior typically occurs in general cycles where one top-level classification of behavior predominates, as follows:

  1. inactive behaviors
  2. maintenance behaviors
  3. general activity
  4. maintenance behaviors
  5. inactive behaviors

Contexts

The categories within general activity contain groups of behaviors which tend to be performed in a sequence (behavior chain) and under similar contexts.
