Dr. Joseph Wu Elected to National Academy of Medicine

October 21, 2019

Joseph Wu, MD, PhD, has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine. Dr. Wu is the Simon H. Stertzer Professor of Medicine and Radiology and director of the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute. He was elected for seminal contributions and pioneer breakthroughs in the areas of cardiovascular medicine and imaging.

New members are elected by current members through a process that recognizes individuals who have made major contributions to the advancement of the medical sciences, health care, and public health. A diversity of talent among NAM’s membership is assured by its Articles of Organization, which stipulate that at least one-quarter of the membership is selected from fields outside the health professions — for example, from such fields as law, engineering, social sciences, and the humanities. The newly elected members bring NAM’s total membership to more than 2,200 and the number of international members to approximately 180.

Founded in 1970 as the Institute of Medicine (IOM), the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) is one of three academies that make up the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (the National Academies) in the United States. Operating under the 1863 Congressional charter of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academies are private, nonprofit institutions that work outside of government to provide objective advice on matters of science, technology, and health.

Congratulations, Dr. Wu!
