Meet Dr. Thomas Insel
Tom lnsel, MD, is a psychiatrist, neuroscientist, and national leader in mental health research, policy, and technology. Since 2000, he’s served as Director of the National Institute of Mental Health, led the Mental Health Team at Verily (formerly Google Life Sciences), and co-founded Mindstrong Health, a Silicon Valley start-up taking on serious mental illness, and Humanest Care, a therapeutic online community for recovery.
In 2022, Dr. Insel co-founded and serves as Executive Chair at Vanna Health, utilizing community partners to create a unique recovery system for those with serious mental illness, and has launched MindSite News to address mental health issues.
He also serves as a special advisor to Governor Gavin Newsom and as Board Chair of the Steinberg Institute, and is the author of Healing: Our Path from Mental Illness to Mental Health. Dr. Insel is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and received numerous awards worldwide.
