Karen DeSalvo

Dean Lloyd Minor welcomes Dr. Karen DeSalvo, Google’s Chief Health Officer, for a conversation about how AI can help inform and advocate for patients while supporting clinicians and increasing access to care around the world. They discuss AI tools that Google has developed to accelerate diagnostics, particularly in lower-resource areas, and they explore the potential for AI to serve as a personal health assistant for patients. They also discuss Google’s strategy for providing accurate, meaningful health information to the general public, and the challenges and opportunities of integrating AI technologies into clinical care.

Karen DeSalvo

Karen DeSalvo, MD, MPH, is the chief health officer at Google, where she leads a team of health professionals that help guide the development of Google’s research, products, and services. Over an expansive career at the intersection of medicine, public health, and information technology, DeSalvo has focused on improving health outcomes and addressing determinants of health. She was National Coordinator for Health Information Technology and Assistant Secretary for Health (Acting) in the Obama Administration, where she was instrumental in the national implementation of electronic health records and advancing health data interoperability. Before her tenure in federal service, DeSalvo was health commissioner in post-Katrina New Orleans, and she also served as vice dean for community affairs and health policy at the Tulane School of Medicine. Throughout her career, she has served on numerous boards and leadership positions, including on the Council of the National Academy of Medicine, the WHO Commission on Social Connection. DeSalvo holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Suffolk University; a medical degree and master of public health degree from Tulane University; and a master’s degree in clinical epidemiology from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
