Welcome to the Michelle Lin Lab

Our lab at Stanford University is an interdisciplinary research team whose mission is to transform acute care delivery and improve population health by generating actionable evidence that informs practice, policy, and systems change.

We bring together experts in emergency medicine, health services research, Medicaid and Medicare policy, data science, and implementation science to tackle big questions using systematic methods. Our work spans local to national levels, bridging the gap between frontline emergency care and systemic drivers of health outcomes. Led by Dr. Michelle Lin, our NIH-funded research addresses these fundamental questions:

  • What systems-level changes make health care easier to navigate, especially for patients who frequently visit the Emergency Department?
  • How can Emergency Departments be leveraged to improve health outcomes for people with barriers to accessing care?

Our previous research has explored the impacts of value-based care, reasons for hospitalization during ED visits, and trends in the intensity of emergency care provided. Join us as we investigate how to cultivate an acute care system that is accessible and effective.

Our core values include:

  1. Equity-Driven Impact: We prioritize research that centers those who experience barriers to accessing healthcare, aiming to achieve equitable outcomes and reduce disparities

  2. Collaborative Excellence: We bring together clinicians, policy experts, data scientists, and community partners, fostering a culture of respect, curiosity, and shared purpose to tackle complex health challenges.

  3. Integrity and Accountability: We conduct our work with transparency, scientific rigor, and ethical responsibility—holding ourselves accountable to the patients, communities, and systems we seek to improve.
